He didn't fail. The movie is great in its own right, but as an adaptation it doesn't carry over the character drama properly. Not to mention Scott and Ramona might as well be two completely different characters.
Ramona acts like a cunt in the movie for no reason, even when unprovoked (which rarely if ever happens in the comics) and Cera plays Scott Pilgrim as just another dorky Cera character, when in reality hes supposed to be an overconfident asshole who doesn't realize his mistakes

Really only the last two volumes are CHANGED story wise, but the entire thing leaves out a ton of content to the point where very important plot threads and context are never mentioned. Stuff like the glow, Scott's relationship with Kim, Kim getting kidnapped, the dynamic between Envy and the evil ex
