Not true at all. In fact there was an entire cultural mechanism for dealing with all the young men denied for service in the Army by the end of the war, suicide was a constant problem in young men denied the chance to fight in Europe.

The US hadnt been heavily involved at that stage.

But we all know that the Americans just swooped in at the last minute when the Germans were already severely weakened by the USSR, and faced very little resistance. The Germans and Soviet soldiers who survived all looked like boomers despite being in their mid/late 20s.

The only old ones in the movie are the Captain (Tom Hanks), the Sergeant (OP pic related), and the other two from the middle portion of the movie (I can't remember, but they were probably Captains as well), from the Dussledorf bit and the wrong Private Ryan bit. Only others I can think of that might qualify as "old" are the guy in charge of Uphum, and the priest.

Yeah. It was an American PoW facility showing footage of a camp that the allies had captured, so obviously it wasn't from the extermination camps, but the ordinary concentration camps.

At the time, the Americans told the German PoWs that the prisoners were deliberately starved, which later proved to be false. So the photograph is sort of misleading, since they're reacting to falsehoods they were told.
