It is a bastardized rewriting of real, actually intriguing history (this film being the primary exposure most normalfags ever had on the subject at the film's time of release is disheartening) for the sake of pushing postmodernist liberal social commentary regrading religion and the post-9/11 politics. Every "good character," both Muslim and Christians ones, is essentially portrayed as a postmodernist liberal for that purpose, despite the inappropriateness of such views for that time period and its absence in the complex thought processes of the real political actors of the time. Every "evil" character, all to my recollection being Christians, is instead portrayed as a bloodthirsty manic. Even Raynald, who despite having committed some questionable actions in his life and further having had the misfortune of being written about in the historical record by a man who despised him, has his deeds and supposed foolishness cartoonishly played up to better justify the wars of Saladin under a postmodernist liberal moral perspective while further vilifying those Christian characters cast as warmongers under that selfsame perspective. The implications of these dynamics and other such myths perpetuated by film have a detrimental impact on those attempting to comprehend either the political situation of the historic period or the state of the region following 9/11 which the film alludes to.
