Why were the 90s so comfy bros
RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY
RUN AWAY, AND SAVE YOUR LIFE
RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY
RUN AWAY, IF YOU WANT TO SURVIVE
I fucking hate Oasis so much. I have no idea why people like still cream about them to this day.
This was by Oasis right? I totally forgot this song existed.
"But don't look back in anger you used to say"
kek
The wine aunt theme song
MAKING MY WAY DOWNTOWN
This and "Live Forever" were the only good Oasis songs.
I don't understand why they were so fucking hyped. They were mostly crap, with a few exceptions. Just a bunch of arrogant Beatles wannabes who thought they were hot shit. I get that these guys were like celebrities in Bongland or whatever but you were just another run of the mill alt rock group here, so the whole "don't give a fuck we're too cool for you" attitude was just stupid as hell.
I can still probably sing this entire album
*sip*
this cover

is really good
Only real 90s kids remember this song
checked and also one of the best songs ever recorded
Any old fags here?
How common were these kind of tomboys/short haired alt girls in the 90's and how many of them were straight?
Now it seems like 98% of tomboys are dykes that try way too hard to look like men.
>ftm
Nice. Good for him.
Somewhat common, but not hugely. Moreso among liberal arts college students. Most normie girls just went for the "Rachel" or some equally dated over-femine style.
>Are ya Are ya Are ya, so high?
Anyone here old enough to remember a decade ago when you'd see a chick like that and think "damn, she's cute, and she's different from the other whores..." and feel something, but now you look at them and you're like oh yeah that's a dyke
not many until this song came out. then pixie haircuts got real popular for like the summer of '97 and their hair grew back and it went back to being 98% dykes
Every Morning > Someday > Fly > When it's Over > Falls Apart
>dykes
*transmen
it was more common than now for sure but i'd say girls with that haircut were still about 75% lesbian so if you tried to hit on them your odds weren't very good because it's not like the 1 out of 4 would probably fuck you anyway, and the other 3 definitely weren't.
lol I just made more or less the same point but for the late 00s I think that's the reason why manic pixie dream girls, tomboys and other "alternative" girls like that are no longer a common romantic interest in movies. The reflexive reaction today is to immediately assume they're lesbians.
I am sitting
In the morning
At the diner

I am waiting

Can we bring back the 90's alt girl tomboy aesthetic back PLEASE
TIME CAME AND SHOWED ME YOUR DIRECTION
is she a gay girl, a gay boy that looks like a girl or what
Honestly I don't fucking know she/he says he is a boy
I remember that Gen Xers used to consider 1998-2004 the downfall of pop culture and the cancerous teen pop / nu metal / trl era. People kept saying "1993-1997 was the true 90s" or "That 98-99 pokemon britney nsync stuff wasn't true 90s, felt more like proto-2000s".
But nowadays, you have millennials in their late 20s on Buzzfeed/Twitter saying how 1998-2004 was the golden age of pop culture or "the 90sest era ever", and consider anything before 1998 to be outdated/overrated/not interesting for them. A complete reversal in opinions.
What era do y'all think felt more 90s: 1993-1997, or 1998-2004?
So Kiss me...
90's Winona was peak tomboy
YEAH MY GIRLFRIEND
SHE BRINGS ME ROBERTOS JUST BECAUSE
YEAH JUST BECAUSE
I heard a really annoying cover of Sixpence's "There She Goes" on the radio the other day
The dude could not sing at all
90-96 for me. Late 90s and early 2000s were ok but seemed to be when shit started going downhill. Pop culture after 2010 has just been complete dogshit and I don’t think there’s any coming back
Underrated as fuck
As a kid, literally just hearing the words "lying naked on the floor" made my peepee feel funny.
They weren’t as common as you’d think in the 90s. Only short hair tomboy girl I can think of during that time was K.D Lang and Sarah McLachlan.
Alt girls were the Courtney Love, Shirley Manson variety
1990-1999
Lol
I legit cried when I heard this song for the first time in years a few weeks ago.
Not just from nostalgia, it made me think of my first relationship and the feeling of wasted youth I carry with me.
Early 90s were basically the 80s. It was only about '92 that grunge really started permeating pop culture and '93 that the 80s cheese ballad crap, new jack swing, synthpop and hair metal started to fall off radio and MTV playlists in favor of newer alt rock/rap/modern acts. By '97 though alt rock started getting got tossed aside by major labels for gangsta rap and very obviously manufactured boybands/girl groups. So still 90s-ish until the early 00s but the music industry was veering away from the weirider stuff. By 2004, it was obviously a VERY new generation of music.
so was 2000 Rachel Leigh Cook
>tfw 36

Is this song about rape?

Yup. Absolutely crap. Way to ruin a classic.

I'm talking like the turn of the 90s like 90 - 93.
Lol imagine anyone ever happening nostalgia for anything after 2010? I see why too many zoomers nostalgic for the 80s and 90s I’m like why do they care about decades they weren’t even alive during but I guess it makes sense even a lot of them realize the shit they grew up with is shit compared to us 90s kids!

Again, every generation is like this. I'm sure zoomers will shit on people who will get nostalgic for the 20s decades from now.
You aren't special for being "90s kid"
Based other Verucaposter user!
Remember when MTV shilled this guy so hard and his crap album was in every single record store (yet sold zero copies).
The funny thing was that this song came out the same time as "The World is Not Enough" yet he wasn't even in it or part of the soundtrack, so what was even with all the James Bond shit?
Wonder where all these long-forgotten 90s one hit wonders are now...

>Fastball front man Tony Scalzo came up with the idea for the song after reading articles which described the June 1997 disappearance of an elderly married couple, Lela and Raymond Howard from Salado, Texas, who left home to attend the Pioneer Day festival at nearby Temple, Texas, despite Lela's Alzheimers and Raymond recently recovering from brain surgery. They were discovered two weeks later, dead, at the bottom of a ravine near Hot Springs, Arkansas, hundreds of miles off their intended route.
>About the song, Scalzo said that "It's a romanticized take on what happened" - he "pictured them taking off to have fun, like they did when they first met.

For me I think it was the Cannonball video being the first time I was like now that’s a cool ass 90s video (all the early Spike Jonze directed ones seemed to be the first with that real 90s-ness)
Not that common, which was the bane of my childhood. Natalie started my fetish for short haired girls. Usually when a girl cut their hair short, it was just into a bob like what Victoria Beckham had in Spice Girls.
i know right it's amazing, it almost feels wrong to see these iconic music videos in such clarity when they've been cemented in memory as SD for so long. i feel it's so important to give them this kind of treatment though because some music videos are just as important to me as my favourite films, i hope smashing pumpkin's 1979 gets a remaster

Indeed it was a great track. Love Louise's solo and Nina's vocals on that one.
I'll post their only other video from the pre-breakup period. youtube.com
From the perspective of where grunge/alt rock was going, I think they would have been much better off had they released their first album in 93 instead of 94 but apparently Nina had anxiety issues and Louise had to build her confidence up to face crowds.

Current female pop artist are such hacks in comparison
Interesting.
Most of these don't look THAT markedly different from the originals (being that they were shot fairly highly stylized, with particular lighting, using video SFX etc. so HD won't do a ton for that) But on some of the closeup shots you do notice a lot more detail in people's faces and stuff.
Holy crap. Now this one literally looks like it was filmed yesterday. So much detail.
I totally forgot about this song too (probably because it wasn't very good and I used to change the channel when it came on).

Yeah. Catherine Wheel had some great songs in the early 90s. Kind of grunge-y, shoegaze-y.

Some rare footage of her in the first incarnation of the breeders with Kim deal from the pixies too. Tanya looking extra cute here. I know it’s a 90s thread but throwing muses was great too I think that’s more associated with the 80s though
That show was annoying as shit. I don't give a fuck about the gay threeway hole you dug yourself into, put the music back on
For me, it’s Can’t Hardly Wait
Did Frank and Kim just mutually agree to do side project stuff at this time in the hopes it would cool tensions within the Pixies? I'm not well versed in Pixies history, or this song, pretty cool stuff though, thanks for sharing!

The story behind why Kim and Tanya couldn't co-write an album together struck me as odd (I guess since Pixies and Throwing Muses were on different labels) Kim had to write the first album, and Tanya was supposed to get the second (Belly's first). Kim not looking bad either, thanks for sharing.

I remember hearing this a lot in '97 and tried to find it at Sam Goody's, only to find that not only was it not on any of their albums, it wasn't even released as a single in America. In fact, it wasn't even a new Oasis song, it was 3 years old at that point. I finally got the import single at Borders (which has some great B-sides on it).
Pretty weird though that they just started playing it in heavy rotation for seemingly no reason at all. You couldn't do that on radio today.
It went shit around 2000 when it suddenly became nothing but Christian rock, Metallica (how in the fuck were they "alternative", especially at that point), rap metal, post-post-post-post-grunge, shitty stoner ska crap, and other literal 12 year old angsty shit.

I don’t remember them playing Christian, but they def went all in with numetal, Bizkit and Linkin Park
You're telling me dude. I started listening to "modern rock" stations back when it was all just British indie dance-rock shit like EMF or like Morissey and R.E.M.
Literally before all the grunge stuff. To hear it go from that to literal lowest common denominator buttrock in about 6-7 years was shocking. At least when grunge took over you still heard a fair amount of female singer-songwriters and other sort of oddball acts or stuff that sounded very different from grunge. By the end of the decade, it was all stuff that sounded 100% the same, were major label artists, and ever radio station had the exact same playlist (ie. no more regional/localized hits).

There was like a 90's rock ballad song with a music video where the band members were walking and playing the song on a field and I think the video was in a blue filter like pic related.
I have no idea what song was.
She could get really intense in her vocals. I have a bunch of ripped stems of just her solo vocal tracks from her biggest hits. I loved her style, but she got ragged on a lot for her aggressive spiking cadence and lilting in her singing.

this actually makes a pretty good point about the current culture of fear mongered statistics that(when closely examined) are quite misleading and poorly made
A song about nostalgia for a nostalgia thread. Literally from the *before they got big” album too.
This thread has got me nostalgia in bed kino
What made us think that we were wise and we’d never compromise.
FOR THE LIFE OF ME
No :/
Totally dig the vocal harmonies. Will listen to that record for sure.
Speaking of the underrated from the period, Helium anyone? Mary Timony is a great musician, though I could see why the sound of the band (and her vocals) were a little off-putting. youtube.com
>In response to questions about the spiritual overtones of some of their songs, singer Jason Wade has stated that Lifehouse is not a "Christian band" but that he is a Christian.
Damn, always thought it was about a chick
Remember when every graduation's photo montage was set to either this, Vitamin C "Friends Forever", Green Day "Good Riddance, or Eve 6 "Here's to the Night"?
1. This is my jam
2. What do you mean "bring back"? What do you think Art Hoes are?
let that be a lesson to all of us; alt girls like bros. Just be a bro and you'll get the alt girls and the straight girls
Time is never time at all; you can never ever leave without leaving a piece of you.
And our lives are forever changed - we will never be the same. The more you change, the less you feel.
Believe, believe in me - that life can change, that you're not stuck in vain.
Just perfection
What girls do the alt guys get?

Achy Breaky Heart was inescapable for a year or so before the grunge era really took over. How the fuck did that happen?

cracked was really good for a few years before they fired everyone and turned it into cucked.com. regardless of his politics seanbaby was one of the funniest people on the internet
Holy Shit this was great. Used to roll around town with my guys in my buddy's car, all of us lit on mushrooms BLASTING pork soda. Good times
do kids even still drive around getting fucked up listening to the same song over and over anymore?
This, basically
this. The only "alternative" bands that had found stadium-sized followings were U2 and R.E.M. (and the Cure to a lesser extent, who were more niche/goth). The rest were still playing clubs and theaters, even if they may score a fluke radio/MTV hit or two. Nirvana and grunge changed all that and major labels signed up any weirdo "alt rock" or noisey distorted guitar bands they could. It wasn't overnight though. People think it changed the day that "Teen Spirit" was released but that took a little while to become a major hit and even people weren't sure if it was a flash in the pan kind of thing. Plus, grunge was stylistically closer to a lot of that era's hard rock, than say Beck or whoever would be.
alt chads get the hot girls. the rest of the alt bros get "friends"
No Idea. I still do though ;)
CAUSE I'M JUST A TEENAGE DIRTBAG BABY
Shirley Manson... top-tier 90s alt-fu
This was also on MTV at one point.

Lilith Fair-core was great. I miss women being represented in pop music like this. Talent over image/sex appeal/12 year old-targeted shit.
thanks for a great thread fellow boomers. fuck zoomers and fuck the multicultural hellhole that has grown around us
>First single from the first album
>It's a cover of somebody else's song
>Becomes a worldwide hit and biggest song of your career
Why is this allowed?
Very quality song
Amen to that. Always fun to pretend it is 1995 again.

Forgot about this song until I heard it during a 90s weekend on the radio
>fuck the multicultural hellhole that has grown around us
Multiculturalism is fine. I just wish it was the best of every culture instead of just utter crap pandering to total morons. The average American is frankly an idiot.
IT'S BEEN ONE WEEK SINCE YOU LOOKED AT ME

I listened to this song every day after school. Also the whole album in general.
Before the thread dies, yeah Tracy Bonham is really talented and Burdens of Being Upright is a very good album. I think she just broke in too late in the decade to make it bigger like say PJ Harvey did.
Hopefully we can do a thread like this again some other night (preferably when more people are awake though, because it's the dead of night in America and barely 6 in the morning in England)
Yeah I listened to the whole album after hearing mother mother was surprised how good it was considering she’s mostly known for that one song. Yeah if she was more in the 92-95 bracket I think she would’ve been a lot bigger.
You're right about Champagne Supernova, but you miss the point about Oasis. People wanted the 'real' rock 'n roll of the past to come back, and it seemed to be doing so with Oasis. It united young and old and so they were popular. Also listen to Supersonic and tell me that isn't a really good song with a straight face.
Robbie Williams was a huge star in UK and the rest of Europe with many hit songs, he was even opening musical act of European football World Cup of 2018
Closing my contributions with another great 90s alt rock/grunge/space rock band, Failure. Not many people heard of them, but Tool/Deftones/A Perfect Circle and Veruca Salt all loved them. Heck even Paramore covered their stuff for some reason.

>Also listen to Supersonic and tell me that isn't a really good song with a straight face.
Not gonna lie. I didn't know this song until I got to the chorus and then I remembered it. Not too bad, seems a bit generic now though. But certainly more "rock and roll" than Wonderwall.
>she sits alone by a lamp poooooost
MMM MMM MMM
Absolutely. Yea Forums is too busy arguing about Fantano and waifuposting Billie Eilish to save room for us 90s boomer rock fans.
I used to think that and youtube.com
Yeah, they aren't amazing or anything
Which is the reason Adam was hired to do Loveline, because the other host didn’t want to be on tv. Worst decision of that dudes life.

No they're not. I'm sure they were fresh at the time for many people compared to grunge, but time has done them no favors.
Also, I forgot about "Don't Go Away". I kind of like that song now even though it's clearly not very good at all. Maybe just because it wasn't drilled into my head like Wonderwall.
Beavis and Butthead showed me a TON of amazing music.
Thanks for all the memories, BoomerFriends. I’m blowing dust off my Walkman and grabbing my Fivestar book bag before heading to the bus
>preferably when more people are awake though
This thread was only good because everyone is asleep. Do this during peak hours and it will be typical Yea Forums garbage.
Haha, I posted that Hum video higher up the thread. Both Hum and Failure had the space rock sound going on, along with a couple other bands, like Shiner (who became The Life and Times in the 00s.) youtube.com
I only know about all these bands because Louise Post of Veruca Salt constantly praises them, sometimes it just takes a moderately more famous musician who really loves music to get more people into other great music.

i've never met anyone else who remembers this video
its never coming back
All of my favorite music threads have been on Yea Forums, not Yea Forums. Hitting a bump limit on Yea Forums for a good thread is unheard of.
This.
These discussions are better when you're at night with insomnia
there's a good podcast about woodstock 99 going on right now

they had several huge songs and albums, I'm sure he's worth $50 mil or so easy
I like how the nu-metal millennials had to appear at the end of our 90s alt-rock thread and shit it up. Represents how reality went well.
Basically. It's shocking how fast the change happened. I blame KROQ (the LA station that most other alt rock ones followed for playlist tips which suddenly veered into skater/stoner tier bro music towards the end of the decade). They were the ones that broke Sublime and RATM (who are good) but helped precipitate that later sound. In fact, most of the shitty nu metal crap was SoCal-rooted and whose fanbase were initially KROQ listeners.
amazing thread love you all
