I think the point of the scene, perhaps the whole middle act, is the forging of human bonds in the most unlikely conditions. Yes, Butch did screw over Marcellus by not throwing the fight. Yes, Butch did lead them into the pawn shop, but he didn't know it was going to be owned by a pair of psychopathic rapists. Yes, Marcellus was trying to kill Butch, but he had every reason to at the time.

Butch goes back and saves him because he's a good man at heart, and he can't leave a man behind. There's a connection between Butch and what happened to his father and Major Coolidge. Both were trapped, both were prisoners of sadistic torturers, and both forged a bond with another man. Butch feels guilty that he is the only member of his generation who didn't go and fight in a war. When he goes back to save Marcellus, he takes his place in the circle of life, restores his honor, and completes the flourish by riding into the sunset with his girl on a mighty steed ("it's a chopper, honey.")
