ANOES 1/3/4 make for a near perfect trilogy except that Patricia Arquette didn't come back for 4 which is my personal favorite of the series. Kinda like how Star Trek 2/3/4 is also near perfect but taken down a notch by Kirstie Alley not playing Saavik in 3 and 4!!!FACT!!!

Why don't we all face it that the Horror genre peaked in the 80's, died in 1989 and has been in the shitter ever since. In 1988 Horror was booming with ANOES 4, Halloween 4, Friday the 13th 7, The Blob, Child's Play, Night of the Demons, Hellraiser 2, Pumpkinhead, Phantasm 2, Elvira Mistress of the Dark (yeah that's right, fuck you), Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Return of the Living Dead 2, They Live, Sleepaway Camp 2 etc... all released that year. Afterwards EVERY SINGLE FRANCHISE went right into the fucking toilet, even movies like Alien 3, Predator 2 or mainstream action flicks like Lethal Weapon 3 or Die Hard 3 sucked compared to that made in the 80's.

Didn't help that after Reagan deregulated the market and removed anti-trust laws, the major studio's started consolidating the market and conspired with the MPAA to kill off independents who specialized in Horror.

It truly was the best decade for horror, I'm not sure if I can pinpoint why. Every decade has there standouts but the 80s had quality horror every single year and lovable cult classics like no other decade. The 90s were generally great for cinema but horror took a serious beating, I don't know what happened, I think people's tastes just changed as movies became more serious and dependent on CG

I think it's because there was a lot of variety (slashers, sci-fi horror, body horror, supernatural, erotic, comedies) but a unifying feel to it all; a sense of fun tempered with an edge (no modern horror comedy would go as far as AWIL or Night of the Creeps in terms of actual scares). Most of the best films from the era were also made by directors who were sincere fans, not just giggling reference machines or mainstream directors ''exploring'' the genre.

It was also still possible to spawn genre-exclusive stars like Jeffrey Combs, Robert Englund, Lance Henriksen, Bruce Campbell, Linnea Quigley (and various other scream queens); that sort of cult of personality doesn't really happen for horror movies anymore, and if there is a role reserved for genre stars, it's usually a cameo (Tony Todd in Hellfest, Englund in various Sci-Fi originals).

The idea of a dream monster could work in any era but Freddy Krueger has been ran into the ground and trying to make a similar concept would get everyone crying about how it's a shitty rip off.

I always thought a tv series would be a better way to reintroduce Freddy to new people while still keeping old fans interested. The remake was shit for a few reasons, but a big one was that it was just a rehash of the original, but done worse. My idea would be to have it set over 4 or 5 seasons with each season featuring a different cast of teens in a new decade each season starting in the 80s going to present day. I always liked the characters in the Elm Street movies because they feel a bit more developed than most other slashers victims (not much, but a little). With a tv show, you can get a lot more of that character development so their deaths are all that more meaningful, I'd want the first season to end with all or most of the teens dying. Freddy Wins. Season 2, one of the protagonists could be a surviving relative of one of the previous season's victims. Each season you/the characters learn just a little bit more about Freddy. The final season would probably be the Dream Warriors, led by the Dream Master trying to permanently put Freddy down.

this may sound ridiculous, but I'm noticing how hypnotic those late 80s slashers can be, some 30 years removed. It's subtle, but I love how otherworldly every shot becomes in movies like those. Knowing that everything is shot on 35mm, seeing the labels/packaging for products that don't exist anymore or have been redesigned, the different clothes, etc. 80s slasher films had this teen campiness that I also notice in 80s high-school comedies

Purge is a fantastic concept but even the first movie already completely fucked up the execution, and the sequels probably just kept serving diminishing returns, so I never saw them. But that doesn't change the fact that under the right people it could have been a decent horror franchise with big how far will you go moral questions as its foundation. Now it's just cheap shit with decent gimmick.

The first movie really should have built more on the personal relationships in the neighborhood at the beginning and made the later moral complexities of whether or not they send the black dude out more difficult, because the movie loses all steam after halfway through and just starts to meander around. Like, the black dude should have been a little kid or something, so it would have been far harder to say "fuck him, we need to protect our family.". And the twist with the cunt neighbors was too lame, because they never really build the distaste properly and it's done in a way where's it's far too obvious of a twist.

Didn't they kind of pivot toward PG-13 ghost shit for a while? That hard R rating didn't really optimise profits and the excessive gore got bad press. Plus you can see worse torture/gore in mainstream normalfaggot shit like Game of Thrones now. No market.

It's meh to OK at best but what annoys me is it isn't a Die Hard movie. Die Hard is specifically action in an enclosed location the protagonist can't leave, but 3 is just random action all over the place.
