The depression concerning the childrens on this show is basically lonely beings with nobody really caring about them on the first place and how they handle to be EVA pilots.

yes, these are 100% valid concerns when you take into account that Shinji had quite literally nothing else in his life. nobody likes him for any reason other than the fact that he's an Eva pilot. When he pilots the Eva and succeeds he's treated like royalty, even when he fails he's still supported by friends and peers. but when he doesn't at all, he's a complete nobody, unlikable, miserable pile of shit and nobody pays attention to him. he has to cope with the fact that even though he hates piloting the Eva more than anything, he must accept that this is his new life whether he likes it or not. And he doesn't like it, but the whole world, including the father he so desperately craves validation from, needs him to do it, so he does.
