I'm not a fan of doxxing myself, but if you want a little gist, I wrote on Nikkatsu and the "Sun Tribe" youth cinema of postwar Japan.

Richie is a fine writer, and I've gone through his works both in and outside of film history. If I had to recommend a favourite, definitely check out his book on Ozu (and it's been a while, but I remember Japanese Aesthetics being pretty good too). Richie is certainly one of many people whose work has motivated me to continue my studies beyond undergrad, and to take academia as a serious career choice - i'm yet to see where that lands me.

I read once that it's amazing that Japan has consistenly gave great films and directors despite Japan has one of the worst conditions for an author to work (insane demands from the studios, the agencies taking the actors at any moment they want, the Japanese law doesn't allow to block streets for filming, etc), not including the shitty Japanese culture that forbid invidual expression.

-Kenji Mizoguchi
-Kinji Fukasaku
-Nagasi Oshima
-Shohei Imamura
-Takashi Miike

There are thousands. What's the point of this thread?
