I don't think it's too implausible. Apparently they had already come up with the idea of an atomic bomb opening a portal to the lodges back in the 90's when they were planning on making a movie trilogy. Unfortunately, FWWM bombed and they cancelled them.

Jupiter is known as the great protector. It goes way back to before real astronomy, but Jupiter's gravity well does play a role in protecting Earth from comets and asteroids, and was likely a key element in Earth's formation/evolution.
Though realistically it also plays a role in flinging a rock our way sometimes.
