I am baffled by Avery Brooks' style of acting.

I know Brooks did a lot of Shakespeare, so his performance is very theatrical compared to the other cast members, but it just feels very out of place and I'm wondering if I'll get used to it.

Did anyone else have this reaction when first starting DS9?

no

Yep. It actually gets a lot better over time, and you get used to his character being kind of over-the-top punctual with all of his lines. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Yeah I felt that way. It starts to feel less out of place when they start to write Sisko's character more towards Brooks' talents and out of all the Trek captains Sisko probably has the least (proportional) screentime on his own show anyway, so even if there's something about him you don't like DS9 just has so much more to offer in terms of great characters.

He grows into the role around season 3 but you'll get used to it by then.

>his performance is very theatrical
yes, large motions and movement, annunciation, projecting his voice. all stage techniques to be sure the audience can see and hear everything. it's odd at first, but makes sense and becomes less pronounced.

after the first costume change it gets better

Good to hear that the writing found a way to utilize his "unique" way of saying lines.

I wonder if the other actors were initially weirded out by his acting when they first started filming.

Is he the teach from American History X?

MEIN KAMPF????

say what you really feel bro. don't hold back.

DS9 was dog shit, compared to Next Generation.

I always thought he was Picard with black skin. And more boring.

I just take it to mean what his personality must be like. Some people appear to be more theatrical in their behaviors than others.

BU-LACK PEEPLE WEREN'T VERY WELCOME THAR.

>Sits in chair
>"Do a thing!"
>Random pilot of the day somehow flies the ship and fires weapons all at once by themselves
>"Hes such a great commander!"

Compared to the other cast members, sure. But compared to the other captains, well, the only other shows were the one where the lead is known for his bombastic performances, and the one where the actor also brought his theatrical background to the bridge.

Yeah, they call this "bad acting". And no, regardless of what the other trek dweebs in this thread are saying it never gets better during the series.

Brooks is legit crazy. If they were weirded out it wasn't from his acting.

He played a Space Moses. His acting fit that great.

Sisko is based and redpilled, one of the best captains I say unironically.

Pretty sure Sisko's passion is the reason I've been beating off to BBC porn for twenty years.

DS9 was a subtle mind virus to bring millennials a lifelong addiction to the bull.

His angry voice is great, he speaks low and quick like he's running out of breath.

You ever seen this guy in anything else? No? You know why? Because he's a shit actor who can't get work.

he was coked out of his mind the majority of the time
