He gets a girlfriend. He attempts an assassination. He gets to know and saves a child prostitute. If it was good it would juggle these plots or motivate each other. There is not enough time for the child plot by the time it comes up. It is bad.

What brings cohesion to the story is his decaying mental state and and how his inability to carry forward with any of the things he attempts lead him to come up with increasingly fancier plans to display "heroism" and gain, in his mind, acceptance. Things are not meant to be tied together in a rational way because that's not how the main character and narrator behaves.
