The teasers didn't give away shit at first. Just showed Arnie stepping out of the tissue generator. It wasn't until the GnR video "you could be mine" was premiered. Some people only watched it for the T2 spoilers. It was pretty ingenious of Cameron and GnR.

My dad and I saw this teaser in the theater right before Total Recall or The Running Man, I forget which one, and nearly shit ourselves.

The Skynet that sent back the T-1000 was designed on artifacts from the original 1984 terminator, presumably it was able to learn that sending back a nearly unstoppable killing machine means nothing if it’s always attracting police attention. So the T-1000s first priority is to imitate a figure of authority, which just so happened to be the first guy it ran into.

The alternate timeline hypothesis is also bullshit. Creating another timeline means creating an entirely new universe which means a time machine is an infinite source of energy, which is impossible.
The only time travel that is possible is the closed loop variety like T1.
