It doesn't take a genius to understand that the modern screenplay comes from the theatrical play. Welles was a playwright and ran plays, too. Most of CK's innovation mostly comes from Welles' theatre background and misunderstanding of common filmmaking techniques. He even said that the cameraman wanted to work on the film because Welles had never made a film before and it'd be interesting (though this is the same dude that said he ate dinner with Hitler in Austria in a time when Hitler was never in the country so take that with a grain of salt). CK doesn't even have a narrative structure that films today use.

Also, King Kong? Wizard of Oz? Two of the most famous films ever created with common narrative structures used today which were both released years before Citizen Kane. The worst thing about old movies (and I mean real old movies) is honestly the unimaginative use of the camera.

Before directors like Hitchcock came along and showed how you can use the camera to create a certain mood they were often incredibly lifeless and dull. Often makes them a bore to watch.

Old cameras barely fucking worked and producers back then were total retards who thought people would get headaches from movies longer than 10 minutes. It's less them being unimaginative and more directors having too many restrictions. Once the technology got better and producers more lax, cameras were suddenly being used in much more creative ways.
