SyFy is run by idiots who make shitty deals. They made some terrible deal for Expanse where they were paying for more than half the production and getting none of the profits. Because people simply weren't watching it live on SyFy.
So SyFy canceled it.
The show would have died right there but it was Jeff Bezos' favorite show so he threw money at acquiring it so they could continue it on Amazon and bought the streaming rights for the earlier seasons so Amazon Prime could have all of them so new people could watch when Amazon over-hypes it later this year.
