I agree with OP's statement that these films do form the greatest film trilogy ever, but not that they always will be. Times and values change. This era of remaking the same movies with black or women castmembers will end and people will want something new. Its hard to see the end of an era when you are in the midst of it.

There's actually a bit in the books that covers it, actually. A character called Tom Bombadil was able to put on the ring during a little singing bit and have nothing happen. It was explained by his wife, the lady of the river, that it was due to him being his own master- the ring held no sway over him. It was briefly discussed that the ring be left with him, but basically he's an easygoing wood hermit and doesn't really care for much outside of his little life, so he'd likely lose the ring and not be bothered to find it again.

I literally haven't seen it since ROTK was in theaters, so it's not like I can remember too well

The CGI can be spotty in some places but its still a very good watch. The extended edition adds a lot but it doesn't feel unnecessary imo, just fleshes out more parts of the story.

It’s a generic high fantasy story I could play Skyrim and tell my own story unique every time. It’s a great movie but hopefully the Amazon series will be a better format for it.

I rewatched the whole trilogy this weekend and while it is still good there's some dumb shit here and there like every Gimili scene being comedic relief, even during battles like Helms Deep, and all the main characters having massive plot armor

See three colours, the vengeance trilogy or the Cornetto trilogy. However they share a common theme, filmmaking technique, location, etc. that make of these movies a coherent whole.

The miniseries cut of pic related is almost 5 hours of a married couple talking to one another.
I think it's clearly a superior work.
Not being as good as Bergman is a pretty lofty standard and hardly a criticism of Linklatter. But as a 'masterpiece' it is an inferior version.

I think Before Sunrise stands on its own far better. That film actually manages to capture something relatively unique and in a seminal way.
Because even with that, there is a Bergman equivalent 'Summer with Monika', which is one of my favorite films, but Before Sunrise manages to achieve things which Bergman could not.
