I've started a rewatch recently and I just finished the episode where they go to Rome for two days, that's the point where you're supposed to realize that it's not Don the one who settled with a trophy wife, it's Betty who ended up with much less than what she could have by marrying Don.
Betty is sophisticated, she speaks Italian fluently, she studied at an important university, she was a model. After marrying Don she became a housewife and raised two children, but not even that was enough for Don.
In season 1 they focus on their childish mind, but I think the more she goes on the more she overcomes that aspect and starts becoming aware of herself and her marriage, and that thing with Bobbie Barret is the turning point.

I don't remember too well what happens but I recall she becomes more annoying and upset after the third season, I think the divorce from Don broke her spirit.
