Sorrentino is a very stylish director. If you watch enough of his stuff, the novelty does wear off a bit, but he really has an eye for flair.
The main characters are all very interesting, and their development is more complex in one season than most shows can manage in multiple. Plus the performances - particularly from Law - are incredibly strong.
It also deals with Christianity/Catholicism in a somewhat novel way considering general modern media trends. It's not tradcatholic wank material because of the theology (they go for the aesthetics more than the religious messages), and you don't really need to know much about the church to understand it.
