hey, this isn't half bad.
If you go to russia people will unironically use the phrases from that movie in day to day conversations. Thats how essential to rus kultur it is.
Holy God, even the big budget Russian movies never entertained me. I feel sorry for them for even trying.

I, as the ugly kind of russian men, have to say that that's not true. There are more than enough good looking guys who make it hard for us proto-slavs to compete.

Moscow, My Love
A Soviet and Japanese co production. Very underrated in my opinion.
jews jewing jews
>Kin-dza-dza
utterly based and redpilled
Not him but I recommend Kidnapping, Caucasian Style, made by the same people and even better IMO, in fact, Leonid Gaidai, the one responsible for these movies is pretty underrated I'd say, the filmmaking behind them really is superb, the editing and camera work in particular almost seem wasted on these silly comedies and there's this endearing silent movie feel to them that you don't see every day. Also, I'm no waifufag, but Natalya Varley (which I posted to bump the thread for fear of it dying lol ) really is something else in this movie:

And as another user said, the official Mosfilm Youtube channel is great for exploring russian movies, as they've been slowly uploading their entire catalog subtitled and in full HD, including almost all of Tarkovsky's work, which brings me to another point
Nah man, it's one of those oneiric type movies, you know? You can have your own interpretation and shit, it's probably better to watch it high and not think too hard about it, I'm sure no one knows what it's really about. You're a brainlet for forcing yourself to watch it more than once that's it lol
Btw, can anyone recommend something _unlike_ Tarkovsky, that doesn't take itself so seriously?

These paintings look familiar
Is there a version of Come and See in existence without the awful english or ukranian dubs?
Dubs? The one in Mosfilm's channel is in russian, but the english subtitles are all fucked...

Seleznyova was way cuter in this film than Ivan Vasilyevich
now this kind of thread i can dig
to mention a few things not listed here, for the modern stuff you can watch Zvyagintsev's films, you might've heard of the latest two, "Leviathan" and "Loveless". then there's a really good "historical" one about Ivan the Terrible and his descent into madness and paranoia called "Tsar". another interesting one was directed by Kirill Serebrennikov, who's currently on house arrest because he spoke out against the government, called "The Student". it's about a schoolboy who becomes a religious fanatic and drags the whole school into obscurantism.
Now to get really into the Soviet ones that are not Tarkovsky, Come and See and the standard Russian comedies (which are all great). First off, I'd like to mention the works of Georgiy Daneliya, specifically "Autumn Marathon", which is a fantastic tragi-comedy (the genre the guy basically specialises in), "Kin-Dza-Dza", a really unique social commentary film in a sci-fi wrapper and, possibly, "Mimino", a very bitter-sweet film, which is one of my favourites, but may not be as accessible to you. next, I'd like to mention a few films of Eldar Ryazanov, another master of Soviet cinema, specifically "Office Romance" (my favourite Russian comedy) and "The Garage", followed by "A Cruel Romance" and "Station for Two".

Finally, I'd have to mention Mark Zakharov, a very unique filmmaker. Originally he's a theatre director and that's definitely felt in all of his films, which look like plays playing out on screen. They're mostly fantasy parables, but with some really good ideas. The most socially relevant is "To Kill a Dragon" (although I think it should be translated as "the Dragon"), a look into self-perpetuating tyranny and authoritarianism. Next, one of my favourite Soviet films of all time, "The Very Same Munchausen". I haven't seen Gilliam's version of Munchausen, but this has nothing to do with the actual adventures, it's about the life of the baron after his adventures and how everyone around him refuses to believe in his "fables" and his struggles to prove that he is sane. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.
Also, as an afterthought, I'd just like to mention that almost all Soviet films have a lot of humour them, maybe excluding some very serious ones such as Tarkovsky and so on. That's why you may see a lot of films classified as comedies, but that does not necessarilly reflect what they're about, simply that humour is a staple of Soviet cinema
Hmm, how about what's on the Mosfilm YT channel, other than Tarkovsky, Come and See and the classic comedies, do you have any idea as to what is the best stuff available there?
