Britpop was the last good music genre before MTV started shilling teenyboppers and nighop
Pray that they follow it up with some real music like Bush or Weezer or Smashing Pumpkins instead of this Beatles ripoff boyband Brit-crap.
Or better yet just air Beavis and Butthead.
Did any actual 'britpop' even played on mtv outside a handful of oasis songs, bittersweet symphony, woo hoo, and maybe one or two other minor hits?
Most people just thought of it as alternative anyway...

Usually on 120 minutes they would play a lot of British music here in America.

I mean like regular rotation, not like late at night shit
Why so much hate for oasis? Wasnt that bad.
Today is gonna be the day
That they're gonna throw it back to you
By now you should've somehow

DANCE IF YOU WANNA DANCE
PLEASE BROTHER TAKE A CHANCE
Yeah, Happy Mondays and all that Madchester shit long before Oasis. Even some of that Grebo shit, some of which was huge (Jesus Jones and EMF in particular, though it was one-hit wonder after all). And even in the regular rotation, not just on the specialty shows. One British acts became a glut in the latter 90s that concept of "Britpop" was manufactured (similarly to "grunge" a few years earlier) despite it having no real meaning and the visible presence of British acts on American charts the entirety of that decade.

Why listen to Oasis when you could listen to Stone Roses or Blur?

Because Oasis are clearly superior and more relevant than Blur let alone stone roses.

Among normies, sure.

MTV Europe? Yeah, you saw Britpop bands all the time.
MTV America? Oasis and Song 2 and sometimes Girls And Boys. You'd occasionally see Suede on 120 Minutes. That was it.

looks like a soundgarden video
Because right around the early 90s, newer Brit acts found themselves suddenly struggling to break through on MTV, so major labels in the US that signed these bands would often (and fairly cheaply) redo videos for singles in a grungey sort of aesthetic or with lots of flashey imagery or quick cuts to appeal to the low attention span and familiar styles of American viewers
You can just take any random American band from the 90s and they are better than Oasis

This.
I was 16 in 1996
This is a good looking man
This was shot in my hometown, Lanford Illinois. That woman in the video worked at a local cafe at the time this was made, she's a lesbian btw
>dude I'm just coincidentally wearing similar glasses to John Lennon, it's not like I enjoy and try to encourage the Beatles comparison lmao
isn't that Sandra Bernhard? Looks like her.
Did you know that John Lennon beat his wife?
That woman is Sandra Bernhard lying faggot.
What the hell are you talking about, he gushes about the man everytime he opens his manc mouth? Giz a listen
Yeah, I was making a reference to Roseanne and her character in it, I guess my joke fell kinda flat
He named his son Lennon. I think everyone is aware he’s a Beatles fan.
>autistic zoomer doesn't get a joke
Oh, I thought you knew Sandra Bernhard. That would have been cool.

Yeah, never met her, sorry about that I guess lol
Britpop was fucking awful and so are you
>Wibbling Rivalry
Didn't this crack the Top 40 on the sales charts in the UK? Imagine your band being so huge that even a fucking bootleg of your two wasted frontmen arguing sells like hotcakes.

They spent that entire autumn going out of their way to piss off America for some reason.
This performance, the MTV Unplugged thing, Liam not showing up to shows, their constant belligerence in interviews... it's actually kinda impressive that Be Here Now got to #2 on Billboard.
especially considering the lead single was awful
The video was great though. Song was just too long.

It will never happen again.
Are these secret music video threads or not?
Their label wanted them to make it in America, think they weren't bothered. Look at this mug

Thurston Moore was probably crying himself to sleep for a year after this.
What is Chumbawamba? Obviously not Britpop, but are they britpop-adjacent? Tubthumping was massive around the same time as oasis was big in the US. One of my earliest memories of being aware of popular music.

Yes, they were slightly later than Oasis' entry into the US spotlight. But more of a novelty type song than anything. Nobody remotely gave an actual shit about Chumbawumba.

I remember how 1998-2004 pop culture used to be universally despised. Gen Xers considered it the downfall of pop culture and the cancerous teen pop / nu metal / trl era. People kept saying "1993-1997 was the true 90s" or "That 98-99 pokemon britney nsync shit wasn't true 90s, more like proto-2000s".
But nowadays you have millennials saying 1998-2004 was the golden age of pop culture or "the 90sest era ever", and consider anything before 1998 to be outdated/overrated/not interesting for them. A complete reversal in opinions.
Britpop sucked. After all it convinced Lush to give up what they were good at and try to sell out on their third, and final record.
Oasis was never great. They tried to use the social experiment of talking about how great they were to influence normie retards into thinking they were great. It only worked to a small degree in the US, but I have a feeling you stupid brits sucked that shit right up into your assholes. Shame on you. Don't Look Back in Anger is a pretty good song, though.

92-95 was good. Grunge or really just alt-rock of the period was the last good American music trend.
96-97 was the transition period as most of the original grunge bands were dead or dying figuratively or literally, Smashing Pumpkins decided to go electronic (Billy declared rock was dead) and we were Brit invaded yet again (Blur was ok). Plus the Tupac/BIG thing made rap center stage, and it is never not been since really.
98 onwards was disastrous, thanks in large part to your pic related, teen pop, Eminem, and so on.
L7 photo on Yea Forums. Figures. Trying to talk about a band like L7 on Yea Forums just gets nothing.
People also used to say that 98-99 music like Eminem, Blink 182, and the teen pop was the start of "Gen Y music" (before the term Millennials was popular).
But now that music gets lumped into Gen X culture simply because they came out in years where the third digit was 9, for example Backstreet Boys are an attraction at the Gen X Cafe in Florida.
they´re the only girl rock band that i like
L7 rules
mfw still mad4it
Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory are undisputed classics.
89-94 = true 90s, independent and authentic
95-98 = evolution into corporate shit
99-2004 = utter shit, but what zoomers think is 90s

early 90s was basically the 80s

>I MET MY MAKER I MADE HIM CRY
Nope.
The same reason the Paul McCartney video for "Spies Like Us" never aired in the UK. They have very strict labor rules about, for instance, who can be shown handling instruments in the video (only those who actually performed on the song) and a shit-ton of other stupid bullshit.
>Nope.
So why did they redo the videos then, Einstein?
>actually getting butthurt about this
dilate your fucking skull
Yeah, they were butthurt that no one gave a fuck about them on their first tour of the US. They played huge gigs in Japan only to play to half-empty dives. The band briefly broke up in San Francisco.
Wrong.
The US videos were the originals. They were redone for the UK market.
Nope.
youtu.be
>Yeah, they were butthurt that no one gave a fuck about them on their first tour of the US.
>to play to half-empty dives.
Yes, because Definitely Maybe wasn't even released in America during their first US tour. Their shows were substantially larger by Morning Glory.
Why does Oasis trigger you so, user?
It's because L7 sucks. I did see FNM twice on that tour, though, once before Midlife Crisis blew up and then after they added the second leg. Helmet opened the second show.
>Helmet

It crashed much faster than that. I'd say it was totally co-opted by the time that 4 Non Blondes masqueraded as a "grunge" band to get a record deal and had a Top 40 hit by probably June of 1993. I cannot believe all the fucking trash that was suddenly billed as "alternative" and was just pop garbage but the fags in the band started growing their hair a bit or wearing "ironic" bowling shirts.
It was such a strange time for anyone who'd heard of Nirvana before September of 1991. I had classmates who were dryhumping to Bel Biv Devoe not two weeks earlier that by early November were asking me how I got my Docs so beat up and if I could help them do the same. Culture was 90% normie and 10% punk and at least half those normies became the most transparent posers in just a few weeks.
Okay?
Because they're a fucking shit band. There was so much great music from that period that was overlooked in part from the "alternative rock" facade as well as that Cool Britannia bullshit. It grinds me that Tortoise and Ui and Stereolab and so many others basically languished in obscurity while those fucking muttonhead faggots hogged stadiums and clogged up airwaves.
