As someone who's struggled with urges not too dissimilar from Bateman my entire life, that sentiment really struck home for me. The popular understanding of the film and book is that Bateman's murders (and/or pyschosis) are a result of his attempt to fit in. He hates it so much that he starts acting and thinking out to try and break free from the life that he really hates.
I read it the opposite. He hates his fantasies and he hates his urges. This is very apparent with the dynamic with his brother. He hates his brother because his brother is comfortable being who he is. He doesn't need to conform, but then again, he doesn't want to do the things Bateman wants to do. Bateman legitimately does want to be normal, or at least comfortable in who he is. Granted, the ending does hurt this interpretation a bit, I have to admit.

The core of it is just switching the cause and effect. In the popular interpretation, Bateman acts out because he hates his life. In mine, Bateman hates his urges, so he tries to act normal.
Though Ellis has pretty clearly stated that the popular interpretation is the correct one so that's just more what I personally take from the story thanks to my own urges. Like part of me wishes I would get caught so I could get help so I'm very cavalier with security and evidence.
