2D animation is a hard skill to learn and only Disney has the resources to train a new generation of hand drawn animators. It literally used to be that the only way to be a world class 2D animator was to get employed at Disney where they would offer workshops and put you under the tutelage of one of the great living animators. There aren't any other institutions or colleges that offer what Disney has to offer, not even Cal Arts or Gnomon. Maybe Gobelins in France, but its hard to get work from there.
In contrast, it takes less time to get good at CG animation for a result that studios want.
It's kinda like how when the crossbow and musket became widespread, archers simply faded out of existence. The skill gate to be an archer is way too high and takes too much time when you could just teach someone how to competently shoot a musket in a few days.

I remember having to do Cats twice in elementary school. The play is okay, but pretty weird. One cat is supposed to be reborn, but they spend all this time on cats that don't give two shits about being in the running.

With the amount of CGI they used, I expected it to look better. Go a rocket raccoon route instead of shitty catface filter. The bodies don't even look real, yet they're supposed to be like the catsuits from Broadway. The backgrounds are obviously bad CGI, but I guess they want it to be "whimsical"

I think a favor to Judi Dench who was supposed to be in the original run of Cats in 1980 as one of the leads but tore her achilles before it opened and had to be replaced.
