It was just really well done. Everyone from top to bottom genuinely cared about doing the best they could, the studio took a big gamble by providing tons of funding with almost no executive meddling, and the result was a terrific trilogy.

Tbf they did significantly increase the role of the women in the movies, especially Arwen
(because the movies focus a lot more on Aragorn's "journey" towards accepting being king and fucking Arwen while in the books the matter is settled before they even leave Rivendell). It's not necessarily "affirmative action", but they did change the important of certain characters in order to suit modern tastes. IMO it's a testament to how good all the actors and writers were that this didn't detract from the quality of the movies as a whole.

More specifically, in the books Arwen plays no role in saving Frodo or forging Anduril. All she does is sow a really cool looking flag for Aragorn. In the movies she sneaks up on Aragorn, single-handedly takes on the Nazgul, personally commands the river to wipe them out, and later is the driving force that urges Elrond to order Narsil to be reforged.

They made a little pitch and a lot of studios past. They were resigned to the fact that they would only get to make two films but when New Line took them up they said it should be 3. So based New Line to the rescue again

I agree. It didn't feel forced. In the books we get introduced to Glorfindel for the saving Frodo sequence. In the movies we get introduced to Arwen instead. Fundamentally it's the same thing. An important elf (well half-elf) acting on Elrond's orders shows up and saves the day, and it neatly ties into the Aragorn storyline as well.
