This isn't entirely true. While you probably can't fly a government owned jet, there are plenty of privately owned '''military''' aircraft in the US. The only thing you need is FAA approval, and you can't go supersonic over the US.

The F-18 E/F Super hornets are actually larger than the F-18C/D's. They share the same designation but that's about it. Also the Super Hornets are filling the role of the retired F-14's, so they serve a different function than the regular F-18's.
