an nes emulator "magically" emulated part of a game that it couldn't do and has stayed fixed. In an air-gapped PC with no wifi.

dunno , its the most trouble free container format for me. mp4 has more problems.

MKVs tend to be of the highest quality and require a better than Fisher Price player to play them. That's why OP is butthurt over them.

File types don't matter, the codec does. My Sony blu ray player can't play HEVC mkvs but it can play H.264, and it can't play EAC-3 audio streams but it can play MP3, your PS4 probably follows similar rules and you can use ffmpeg to convert one or more parts of the video and it'll work.
