Convenience I guess, Joey and Chandler became roomates by accident and happened to live across the hall from Rachel and Monica. Ross was Monica's brother. Phoebe is the odd one out, she lived across town from what I remember, doesn't really make sense for her to be in the group.

while a joke may slay, they don't want the laughter to last too long. It also gives them the ability to swap laugh tracks between jokes for the ones that didn't land as well as they expected them; that's why sometimes you'll notice one joke's laugh eerily similar to anothers
