Just came back from the theatre. It's pretty much the exact same movie with a few very minor changes and some extra scenes, even down to the spoken lines, though Timon and Pumbaa have some different jokes and even play on some old jokes they made in the old movie. Some scenes were drawn out for no apparent reason, like the mouse that Scar catches at the beginning has an entire minute of build up. The realistic CGI makes the characters less expressive but that's already a given.

The slap in the face is kind of a hinted repayment for the scar that Scar has, which was implied to have been caused by a fight of dominance between Scar and Mufasa. It's outright said that Sarabi chose Mufasa over Scar and that Scar has the "utmost respect" for the queen. Later, Scar is very much on Sarabi to try and make her his "queen". They have several scenes together where Scar tries to convince her.
