I have really bad anxiety (pathetic, I know), so I sympathize with these people, but the best treatment in my experience is immersion therapy. "Throwing somebody into the deep end" so to speak. For me that would be something like routinely giving public speeches to get over my fear of them. For rape survivors I guess it might be something like having them routinely get raped so that they get over their fear of it or at least have them read and view offensive material so that maybe they can get over their fear of it.

Adding trigger warnings doesn’t at all prevent the option of people from doing immersion therapy though. It simply warns them of the content so they can properly prepare themselves and don’t just unexpectedly worsen their deep seeded fears by having it jump out at them out of nowhere.

I developed multiple irrational fears throughout my childhood that I ultimately overcame by facing them, but I made the decision to do so. I don’t think it would have helped me overcome them at all were I not allowed to confront them at my own pace.

And all the research on this establishes that AT BEST this does nothing, and at worst it reinforces their fears, which is the opposite of what you want to be happening. This even in serious studies with people suffering severe psychosis-inducing PTSD.

Granted, it does help people avoid the content, which might be good if you've got one of those people who go psychotic when they're exposed to their trigger, but that'd be a "lesser evil" of the kind that you just do after you've just given up on every other therapy. And it obviously leaves these people crippled by their pathology forever.
I can't imagine any good reason to do this, except, maybe, I dunno... triage? Even there it's kind of a bad idea since this is worse than doing nothing in terms of theraputically helping the patient improve. Devils advocate here, this doesn't really address what I thought the intended purpose of trigger warnings was: to let people who would be distressed to opt out entirely. The picture just says that if people read them and follow through they are more distressed, but doesn't take into account how many of the subjects would instead simply not consume the media.
