No, the terms "left" and "right" only came into existence because of the French Revolution. There was always a battle between established types and the underclass people. The Populares and Optimates are an example of this during Roman times. Each era has its own issues to be tackled and the values of each era have to be considered in context to whether they are "left" or "right".
