The manga is much more a conventional series, albeit a high-quality one. It has a straight narrative and linear sequence of events that gets resolved, and it explains just about everything. Its ending is overtly optimistic as well and it doesn't delve into the character's psychology like the anime.

The anime after ep 16 as well as the movies are arthouse and the mystery is part of the reason why the season has endured as long as it has. Really 2 different beasts, and it's not surprising that the manga creator Sadamoto and Anno are supposedly not on good terms with each other in recent years.

Would Eva had been better if they stuck to the original prototype? Basically the FAR were a prehistoric human civilization that made an artificial human, ADAM. This ended disastrously so they created the Angels to deter any future development of artificial humans. Humans start making the Evangelions based off of ADAM in the future only for the Angels to release as a result to stop them. This is also why some of them have mechanical designs.

All this shit about Adam and Lilith and clones and mistaking Lilith for Adam seems overly complicated

...no wonder the second half of the series declined in storytelling into the mess that it became later on due to Anno's depression affecting his work. Had Sadamoto stayed on, the series probably could've lasted more than 26 episodes and injected more life everything, but as it is, it's only a thing that became profoundly overpraised by Western autistic hipster weebs who rely on "2deep4u" logic.
