Autists that sit at home cataloguing their favorite pop culture products are not geniuses, they don't achieve shit in life, and they never make impact on the world. Actual geniuses are outgoing and sociable, no matter how much their mind sets them apart from the human average.

I don't think you two are talking about the same thing. Genius as that guy meant is someone that could not be like that Will, because that kind of intelligence (as shown in the movie) is autistic level. You are are talking about very very intelligent people that happen to do something huge because of their personal way to see and understand things, guy that memorize and see patterns is the opposite. They will never achieve anything because they don't think out of the box, have zero motivations and have no "genuine" interest in what they're doing (it's more like an obsession or something they just "see" for what it is, without any actual effort, which is not good)

And the whole point of the movie is transferring Damon's character from the obsessive observer to someone who actually wants to put his talent out for others. Or rather it's half of it. That's what the Professor and his friend wanted to drive him to, and he does accept it in the end.

Yes, of course, that's what the movie is about. What I personally find "weird" is...it happened to late for him.
