The only strong memories I have of high school are major milestones (first time getting drunk, first time smoking, losing my virginity - the subjects of most American coming of age movies) and playing Smash in my friend’s basement, which isn’t exactly a compelling subject for a film.

it used to be the only fun part of a life. old enough to have freedom to go around on your own and young enough to avoid most major responsibilities.

It really isn't. Most inmates have access to TV (if they can get their family or friends to cough up enough dough). High schoolers and prison inmates have the most free time and the fewest responsibilities. This is only matched by stay at home moms and welfare queens. This is where the TV audience comes from.

when i was a teen in nyc, i was on freeroam with a curfew from like age 9 or so. and total freeroam by 13. most high schoolers ive known the last few years werent allowed to go anywhere without parental supervision.
