He made some pretty good horror films that ended up being pretty influential, as well as being extremely profitable.
That said, most of his films aren't good, but unfortunately the internet made pretending to like "cult" films mainstream and cool. So you get people who swear on their mother that The Fog or Prince of Darkness is a timeless classic that still scares them today. Just one of those things.
