So it was a happy ending?

So it was a happy ending?

It depends on how you look at it.

>clone of his mom as the "safe" choice
>angsty teen as the other

your choice, senpai

Yes, like Twin Peaks

yeah

It was a depressing ending.

Shinji struggles through all the series with his feelings, with his position in the world, with his capability to trust and make relationships.

That's why he is happy to make everyone into an ocean of LCL, where individuality doesn't exist and there's isn't egos or feelings to be hurt or betrayed.

But then, after talking with two alien Gods that literally love him, he truly realizes that he prefers to be human, because those feelings are real. He prefers to take the risk to be hurt and abandoned, because at the end of the day, everything was real instead of being just a soup of emptyness.

He comes back from the LCL, waiting for the rest of humanity to do the same. Waiting for living life for the first time ever, waiting to build relationships; he has hope, at least. He is happy for his new epiphany regardless life.

But then, nobody comes back. Shinji was scared all his life of being betrayed, of being mocked and left alone, and this time, literally the entire human race is giving him the back. Nobody wants to come back from the LCL, not even his friends.

So he starts to symbolicly bury them in an attempt to search some kind of peace, some kind of meaning to their decisition and his new existence with his feelings and his thoughts.

Some time has passed and suddenly, Asuka comes back.

Shinji is filled with unimaginable rage, hatred and feelings of betrayal for the human race, so he starts to strange her in a maniacal tantrum. But then, she caresses him, because affection is everything that weak willed and pathetic shell of a child is craving for. She knows that, and he knows that.

Disgusting.

It was a cliche'd cop-out ending to make the mainstream happy.

They didn't have the balls to just have the angels wipe out everyone at the end.

It was a gainax ending

nothing in the show makes sense unless you read a wiki specially created for it so the ending is just as meaningless as the rest

The story in the show was made up episode-by-episode. The plot was mostly just an excuse for Anno to animate what he thought looked cool.

The show started out as a collection of animation scenes he wanted to make. And then he just made up whatever plot on the fly that would justify putting that animation in the show.

He readily said he doesn't really care about the plot and is more of a technical guy. It's pretty funny how no one actually talks about the animations and only about the plot while the plot is something Anno didn't even give any real thought to as it was merely a justification for doing some cool animation.

is he the George Lucas of eastern animation?

This. Anno worked for two weeks straight on the iconic scene where Misato crushes a beer. He said in an interview that he managed to get the animation just right and that it was personally the high point of the show for him.

Asuka is back and Rei is gone so yes

Yes. And highly kino.

The fate of destruction is the joy of rebirth.

We all know the symbolism bullshit associated with it, I'm just curious.
What do you guys think happened after?
