You could say she played Gendou to get a child from him (to pilot the Unit as she planned out for Shinji to direct Instrumentality when the time came manufacturing his abandonment to psychologically be where she needed him to feel when that time came) and she knew with her gone that Gendou would push for Instrumentality and do anything for her.
She chose to gain immortality, just like SEELE and Gendou wanted, though all she needed to do was convince one connected incel she loved him and have a child she'd post-accident push to do just what she needed.

There are hints she was more malicious than she appeared

1.) Whenever Eva Unit 1 goes berserk it's truly savage and nuts. "Berserk mode" is just the Eva's soul taking over and is a reflection of that. This is most clear when it rips apart Zeruel and eats its S2 engine (Yui perfecting Unit 1 for her plans).

2.) Rei 1 intentionally goaded/insulted Naoko Akagi out of jealousy when she saw her and Gendo flirting. Rei was a clone of Yui and some of her remained in there

3.) During EoE, Eva Unit 1 only moves when Asuka is announced dead over the intercom. This was Yui biding her time and waiting for the last obstacle to Instrumentality to be out of the way.

4.) The scene where she kills Gendo.

That being said, she still cared deeply for Shinji and all of their interactions are genuine.

As for her intentions, it seems to have been to float through space endlessly as an eternal testament that mankind ever existed. While the Earth would some day day and even the sun would burn out, Eva would float through space for eternity. There is also some speculation that because she went through all this efforts to collect certain things (an S2 engine, an awakened Eva, Lance of Longinus) that she intends to become a new seed of life and create life on new worlds as a god.

"Axis Won WW2" is one of those completely baseless fan theories that sprang up on anime boards in the early 2000s and still endures despite there being literally 0 evidence for it.

You have valid points, just a single observation: nr 1 could be just that Yui is an ape, like me and you and everyone else here barring the occasional poster that is actually a spider.

Point 4 could easily be seen as Lilith posing as Yui to lower Gendou's AT Field and then he visualises for Instrumentality what he deserves after talking with her as he hates himself and explains part of what made him push Shinji away when Yui went was he felt he didn't deserve his love after what happened.

The scaling in this scene is all off. Rei is literally the size of a planet here, if Unit 1 burst from her eye it;d be a lot smaller.

This has to be the rarest screenshot in Evangelion. Everybody just raves about Shinji letting everyone die and all the freaky imagery, that I completely forgot that Shinji and Eva 01 won in the end and returned all souls to the world. After re-watching, I actually cheered.

Her intention to become a new Seed of Life certainly makes more sense than her going full Kars and having a fate worse than death just to show humanity was a thing.
It's a pity the film doesn't show or tell us that and as such it comes off as a really depressing and harrowing end even though the musical cues sound quite hopeful.

How much Shinji "won" is debatable, because a very long time passes before even Asuka appears and she's still the only one. Literally 2 people over potential years. It's doubtufl that humanity will ever return anytime soon. And even if it did they still hae to rebuild everything.

All those theories are fun even if they're not true.

30 years of talking about EVA but not actually watching it sort of decayed everyone's memory about the show. After watching it again with better understanding about depression and Anno's notes, the confusing bits actually make sense now. Eva is an actually decent Disaster Relief Procedural for the first half of the show, and an interesting character study on depression by the second half, culminating with End of Evangelion. Which represents these two major phases quite cleanly. Disaster Strikes, and them everyone gets depressed.

If I had to say so, this show deserves the praise it got all the way back then.

1 happened due to the red colour saturation making Asuka's eyes look brown, though I remember non-colour corrected art was shown off at some point and her eyes were blue in it, so that was Jossed.
2 even though it was directly Jossed by Word of God makes some sense if you consider 'Neon Genesis' as 'New Genesis' retelling the story in a new setting, though again, it's not true.
5 came from the Manga UK commentary to EoE of all things if my memory serves correctly. It posited Keel wanted Instrumentality to bring his endless life to an end, which seems to be just the opposite of what we can infer from the show and movie.
6 came from immediately after Kaji's death and him saying 'Oh, it's you' to the gunshot, there was an establishing shot to Misato's place showing her name. This led Anno to remove that transition in later releases to kill the theory dead, even saying himself it was a nameless NERV MIB thug that shot him.
8 was if memory serves from a Manga UK VHS sleeve mentioning First Impact through it's cover story and also as an aside, Super Mario Bros the movie wasn't that old at the time and also had a meteor wipe out dinosaurs.
The other things I have no idea where people ass-pulled from. Also I know all these theories are incorrect, just thought I'd post where some of their origins hailed from.
