if that is bugging you, don't worry they ease off it. the show gets better, and probably is best in season 4 but it was pretty good all the way to the end.

if you're not liking it, put it off and try again in a year or so. I had some false starts but it clicked eventually. People rave about it and it raises your expectations too much. It's pretty good when you come around to it. You overlook its faults and you'll dig it.

It's like Sopranos except without the mafia thing and with an ad agency thing instead. And there's a lot less ad agency thing compared to mafia things in Sopranos. So it's sort of like Sopranos but with 50% more of Carmela, AJ, Meadow and such at the cost of mafia side.

It's a show made for boomers to wax nostalgic about that time they destroyed the future of America.

It's wish fulfilment fantasy for people who work in the media. Don Draper is the ultimate ad-man, able to figure out how to sell any product to any market. Everyone listens in awe as he talks. He's always right. Nobody ever challenges his opinion or asks "who ass are you pulling your facts out of?" His only problems are that too many women want to fuck him.

He's like Patrick Bateman without the self-awareness.

Except Ginsberg, Peggy and Ted all openly challenge him on creative.

Unironically the best show ever. I've watched a LOT of tv series. All of the classics, underrated gems, you name it. But when I look back on them, I realize that it was time wasted and nothing more. Mad Men is the only show where, whenever I think of it, a bittersweet feeling washes over me. If I could only pick one show to "keep", it'd be Mad Men.

Imagine a show where the writers table asked themselves not "I want to do this bullshit how do we contrive that happening?" and instead asked themselves "how would this character react to this situation?".

it's very good, but ultimately suffers in comparison with the Sopranos. the best series are 3-5, because that's where the show gets the most mileage out of subtly depicting the character's dated attitudes to gender, race, politics, etc.

the trouble with the show is that much of the time it is so close to being a pure wish-fulfillment fantasy that it is barely distinguishable from one. outside of the best seasons it has the friendship simulator, padding and nostalgia elements of a network show. I do like the actual ending, but the cynicism was probably lost on much of the audience.
