Palpatine is ancient and lives through his descendants, one of them being Kylo and Leia; he's also the father of Anakin and the same person as Plagueis.
After an ancient artifact was discovered inside of C3PO's hand (analyzed during the events of TFA), the gang returns to Tatooine to find the rest of this artifact, which is considered to be a way to open the time and space through the force.
Rey goes back in time and becomes Shmi Skywalker. Gives birth to Anakin, who is aware of this ancient temple where the artifact was found, incorporates the part of the artifact into C3PO and we're in a loop.
With every such iteration Palpatine/Plagueis becomes stronger, and the Chosen One is supposed to break this cycle and bring the balance to the force.
Rey, as Shmi, destroys the temple this time, stopping C3PO from being created by Anakin and at the same time breaking the loop, destroying Palpatine.
