i never enjoyed talkshows, i always enjoyed variety shows/music shows with interviews, when "A Prairie Home Companion" went off the air it was all over for me and late night shows, basically, all that is left is "Later... with Jools Holland" but that is not a weekly show, it's sporadic with varying quality

The thing with a lot of these talk shows is that there's no interesting guests on. At all. There's TV channels out there that host nothing but reruns of old as fuck talk shows like Johnny Carson and Dick Cavett and those guys had actual intelligent people on as well as entertainers. This is what my mom watches. The shows would bring in writers, politicians, athletes, musicians, or hell, regular ass people that did something really peculiar or interesting. They wouldn't do interviews but they'd elaborate to some degree on their craft or why the fuck they're there. The shows end with you actually learning or being culturally enriched by something.

Nowadays it's just a fucking revolving door of movie actors peddling the same shit. They come in to do a skit and promote some godawful trash and throw in a few jokes and get out. God forbid they have to improv. They can't do shit. It's very fucking boring and uninspiring.

And then had second thoughts and conceived of the stupidest thing by still putting Jay in front of him in late primetime and weakening both shows and making the tonight show practically pointless. They should have known better. They made their choice and then got weak. They had to let one guy walk and in the end that's just what happened anyway.

Never happened. You should read "The Late Night Wars", it details everything that happened. Neither Conan nor Leno were truly at fault (as many have said in this thread, NBC management horribly bungled the handover), but Conan's attempt to drive Jay out of the show before he wanted to leave led to everything that happened. I don't think Jay is very funny, and I think NBC-era Conan was incredibly funny and likable, but this whole thing was his his own fault.
