In all seriousness has any movie since The Ring outdone it for pure visceral horror? Whether you prefer the Japanese or American version something about the entire concept is just bonechilling and it was executed incredibly well.
Is this just one of those thing where I was young enough that I got scared and no movie since has been able to reproduce the effect because I was older?
Taking suggestions of post2000 horrors you think are scarier, note not just better movies, that's easy, but scarier movies
lads really, nothing, we can't have a thread about horror movies anymore?
Ryder Cook
it's the same on every board. people only want to talk about what is new and what has already been memed to death. Good stuff is ignored or turned into fap fuel. Even if it isn't a series, no matter how good at the start, will devolve into nonsense, see Sadako Vs. Kayako
Christopher Cooper
even like 5 months ago there would be discussion when i posted a thread such as this, is it just summer or what?
I mostly post on Yea Forums which is slow enough despite its decline to have some conversation. This board is like Yea Forums or something at this point it's ridiculous. Everything just gets swept to page 5 in mere minutes, and there is this constant trash about politics, pedos, and more. It's annoying.
Ryan Roberts
Ill give it up to you mate -- ringu, the japanese version, made 10 year old me go numb in the theatre. When she exits the tv screen. Never been so scared in my life. So ill always have some love for this series no matter how milked it gets.
Isaiah Wright
>Is this just one of those thing where I was young enough that I got scared and no movie since has been able to reproduce the effect because I was older?
This is exactly it. Watch it now as if you hadn't seen it before like any other horror movie.
Hudson Foster
Absolutely based thread, OP
Verbinski's atmosphere of dread and visuals are unmatched
>le i want to have a SERIOUS discussion in Yea Forums, why is le everyone dumber then me?!???
Imagine being this much of a faggot
Mason Cooper
Nah, I walked out of that recent Rings movie feeling genuinely offended at how bad it was, and how they felt the need to explain stuff that should've never been discussed
Austin Perez
not even trying to affect that sort of faggotry just a casual discussion of horror movies, for fuck's sakes it's a film and television board m8, it's not unreasonable to just want some recs or discussion.
Jordan Watson
I feel the same as you OP. I used to love watching horror films and The Ring was always the scariest to me.
That said, >Is this just one of those thing where I was young enough that I got scared and no movie since has been able to reproduce the effect because I was older? is probably true also. It's one of those films I wish I could watch for the first time again, without knowing anything about it.
Brandon Long
nice satan digits, I have actually seen it in the past couple years, and while I can't say I was scared, the purely visceral horror of the movie still came through, it's honestly just so well done Rings is trash of course, but I have to admit I kind of liked it, I liked the detective aspect, like they were trying to do academic studies on the tape, it just appealed to me. I know it's retarded though. I also think Verbinski outperformed even the original Ringu, the movie was just soaked in dread and it looked amazing, that shot of the tree for example the red tree over the cottage they stay at, but the original has its own merits, a kind of more creeping ambiguous horror. That is exactly it, that disbelief that such a thing could occur, ruining your understanding of how reality works, imbuing the new technological paradigms with horror, etc, it just shakes you to your core.
Jason Wood
It is probably both at once, that it was a phenomenal horror movie and that it was also particularly impactful for us due to our youth.
It would be good if some zoomers could express the movies they think are scariest these days. Or if really anyone could offer an example of such a movie
I still haven't seen Ringu although I should. "the ring" - which I did see - wasn't too annoying with its jumpscares. Mostly it was just creepy. Good creepy
Nathan Bell
So, was Samara/sidako a demon or what? Was it ever explained in the other movies?
Jayden Hughes
Jesus I can't even look at screenshots without getting chills
Aiden Campbell
It varies. She's a ghost of a psychic girl basically.
Adrian Davis
wow great post user. keep posting
Kayden Baker
it's a dumb movie about a demon and i'd beat the shit out of you you fucking faggot
Jason Moore
Probably because Japanese scares were well done. It was timed right and they never over used it, they always build it up or it happened unexpectedly or rather had a sharp change in mood.
Hollywood jump scare is more about ooga booga loud sound and scary face. no build up or sense of dread.
Liam Campbell
the ATMOSPHERE in this masterpiece of horror was truly something to behold. the green filter in every shot gives me CHILLS!
I don't think it's aged well user. Scared the fuck out of me when I was younger, phone even rang after it was finished. Naomi is cute but I'm pretty sure it's a snoozefest
Ayden Thomas
>while I can't say I was scared, the purely visceral horror of the movie still came through This is nonsense. If you weren't scared, there was no horror.
Tyler Clark
Yeah. I was 10 y/o when I first saw it and I vaguely remember that kids at school were hyping it. Good times.
My pick for this decade would be Sinister. It's flawed, but it's unsettling and has a fantastic soundtrack. Anyway I'm out of the loop and haven't watched horror kinos for a while now.
>inb4 I get a onions (You)
Bentley Perez
A Tale of Two Sisters.
Owen Wright
Hereditary>Ring (both versions)
Owen Smith
Sinister > hereditary Autopsy of Jane doe > hereditary Bug > hereditary
Adrian Perez
>Hereditary just catched this a few days ago, I found it very weak I dont know what is is about A24 movies but something about them is very dishonest maybe i just gotta turn my brain off
Daniel Rivera
The most recent one (Rings) had a really cool idea of academics studying the effects of the tape. I think it would be great if they expanded on the idea of the main villain of the film actually being a professor who was just throwing away the lives of tons of people in order to study the tape and Sadako was viewed more as a weapon or tool than the actual primary antagonist. You would also of course end up with the prof getting killed by her for a type of catharsis. In general the idea of academics or the military or government knowing about the existence of the tape allows for some really neat plot lines.
It would probably be closer to a Supernatural episode than a proper horror film in terms of pacing but I still think it would be really entertaining.

I remember watching this when it came out and the usual fags saying >well ackhshuallyllylyllylyly i heard that the ORIGINAL JAPANEESESESE version is SO MUCH scarier
And then about 7 or so years later I watched it and didn't find that to be the case at all. The american one looked like it had more money behind it, and that that money had been put to good use. The US version added that whole motif with the tree in the setting sun looking like fire or blood etc. Overall a much more memorable experience. Even the curse tape was much eerier and freakier than the jap tape and the whole lovecraftian "fish people from the deep" that the japs always have a hard on for in their legends was omitted and Samara had an ambiguous origin (not counting the shitty sequels).
It's one of the few instances where I prefer the american remake for an asian horror film, because on the whole they are fucking shit. The american little boy is fucking annoying and creepier than the ghost girl at times though, fuck.
