My theater was silent, but there was only about a dozen people. I think the unsettling theme the movie work with worked with the sound design, like in the beginning going from angelic swedish vocals to the phone blaring.

The plot design is a lot of fun with proper ambiguity about whether or not the fucked up parts of the narrative are supernatural or a by-product of Annie’s mental illness. As it unwraps at the end it’s very satisfying and the reveal of the photos of the grandmother doing her coven activities is quite chilling I thought. The fact that the film’s fatalism is operative thru the whole thing but only confirmed thru the course of the third act is worthy of praise in my opinion.

No sort of interesting plot reveal in this new one. From moment one you know exactly what is going to happen. The whole thing is a bore.

There aren’t really any supernatural events until the seance at the start of the third act. There are fucked up moments of personal tragedy - the grandmother’s grave being desecrated, the kid having her head popped off by the telephone pole - that don’t have obvious supernatural or cultic causes.
