What are his best films?

It's a Wonderful Life and Vertigo, and that one movie he was in with Katharine Hepburn. I don't remember the name

They don't even know him.

Everyone knows John Wayne, you tosser

>Why millennials hate him?

They hate everyone.

>awh well shucks yaknow well gee
He's my favourite yank actor of the era easily

Eh not really. I have friends who know Clint but have no idea who Wayne is.

Because Wayne's tired shtick as a conservative macho man is completely outdated and too old fashioned for young people.

Pic related.
Why? Is it because of his policy on the Vietnam War? I know he was one of the few Hollywood people who were outspoken about supporting it and he even made a pro-Vietnam War movie (The Green Berets).
I dig his westerns a lot. The Searchers is obviously a classic, as is Liberty Valance, Rio Bravo (the original one with Dean Martin) and the 'Cavalry Trilogy' is all-around good, too. In Harm's Way is a vastly underrated war movie.
Jimmy is the best, fun to imitate, too.
My personal favourites:
* The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
* The Man from Laramie
* Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
* Rear Window
* Rope
I also dug The Man Who Knew Too Much and It's a Wonderful Life. Need to see more of his movies, though, especially westerns. Vertigo, IMO, is vastly overrated and his character just irritates the fuck out of me in that one.

Too much test

goly gee, why does a hammy actor from an era of movies that have aged like milk and that can only be appreciated by film nerds and historians doesn't resonate with the newer generations? rly makes you wonder

>goly gee
>aged like milk

>le wrong generation
those movies have aged horribly and there's nothing your fedora can do about it

The hell he was!

>those movies

May have something to do with Public Enemy saying "mother fuck John Wayne"

all of John Wayne films. dgaf if Leone was a self aggrandizing asshole, at least he took that shit and did something interesting with it

scratch that, John Wayne films AND 99% of 50s-60s movies are literal trash

MDC classic john Wayne was a Nazi

>all of John Wayne films.
>scratch that, John Wayne films AND 99% of 50s-60s movies are literal trash
not enough close-ups and long takes for you?
>Leone was a self aggrandizing asshole, at least he took that shit and did something interesting with it
Leone's westerns are meaningless shlock you dumb cinephile nigger. there is NO WAY you have seen more than like 20 westerns and even then you probably just passively consumed them without thinking about anything like the cretin you are. God you redditors are ALL the fucking SAME

The duality of John Wayne's impersonations

Is it even possible to be so based?

>Leone's westerns are meaningless shlock unlike John Wayne's films
Brain fried by utter contrarianism

It's funny because it seems like dudes from this time period larped so hard as cowboys in film that they actually began to believe it to the point where they were walking around the real world and larping as cowboy and it affected everything about their lives. Its hilarious/sad

Attached: 1562975005547.jpg (946x1040, 183K)

>contrarianism
a word as meaningless and non-agrumentative as can be. You deflect rather than attack because you have a female brain.

I think the only John Wayne movies I ever watched were The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and The Searchers, I think there was a third but the only thing I remember about that one was the wooden box the DVD came in.

All three filled me with nothing but complete indifference.

20 missions over Europe. Then additional unaccredited missions as part of pathfinders and evaluation. Also, as an observer over Viet Nam.

The Searchers is a masterpiece and John Ford is the greatest American director.

Yeah cos men didn't exist in the 60s

Because he was a racist bigot with diagnosed Autism spectrum disorder.

Because fuck killer clowns

>Gregory Peck
Why isn't this thread about him? Jimmy Stewart's a bro though.

Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne were effectively the same age ~34 when WW2 kicked off. Jimmy served and even became a general in the Air Force while Wayne had the studios get him an exemption from service.

Yet Wayne was the one who put on a swaggering manly persona. I lost a lot of respect for him when I found that out.

John Wayne couldn't act for shit and his movies were 99% shovelware trash. The Cowboys, True Grit, The Conqueror, all horrible. He delivers his lines in the same stilted manner and same accent in every role, no matter the character. He doesn't give a shit. He knows the retard Greatest Generationers will eat it up.

Not true. He is great in The Searchers, The Quiet Man, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Shootist and Rio Bravo. When he works with Ford, Hawks, Siegel or some other good director he is very good.

Ok Grandpa.

I don't even know him

Go back to Transformers

>became a general
Woa!
>in the Air Force
Pfffttt.. LMAO HAHAHHAHAHAHAH

Anatomy of a Murder is the single best courtroom drama ever made.

this user has the right idea
I also recommend the westerns he did with Anthony Mann

Thanks, i will check those out. I have seen him in Rope, Rear Window, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and Vertigo. He was really great in Vertigo.

Because he was a horrible actor?

18 year old zoomer here, my dad showed me some stuff like Shane but this is literally the second time I’ve heard of him in public discourse, the first being when my burger history teacher brought him up The Green Berets during the Vietnam unit.

SeeAll he’s remembered for among classrooms that aren’t film is that one time he made a “support the troops” flick in response to lack of support for the Vietnam war.

Wincherster 73
Vertigo
Rear Window
Rope
It's a Wonderful Life

Winchester 73 has overtaken The Searchers as my favourite Western, it's a near perfect film.

he was too!

He was a Nazi

Millennial here. I love The Duke.

to add to your list:

The Road to El Dorado
The Sons of Katy Elder

Rear Window
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Vertigo

>PLAYBOY: What kind of films do you consider perverted?
>WAYNE: Oh, Easy Rider, Midnight Cowboy—that kind of thing. Wouldn't you say that the wonderful love of those two men in Midnight Cowboy, a story about two fags, qualifies?

>WAYNE: Well, the liberals seem to be quite willing to have Communists teach their kids in school. The Communists realized that they couldn't start a workers' revolution in the United States, since the workers were too affluent and too progressive. So the Commies decided on the next-best thing, and that's to start on the schools, start on the kids. And they've managed to do it. They're already in colleges; now they're getting into high schools. I wouldn't mind if they taught my children the basic philosophy of communism, in theory and how it works in actuality. But I don't want somebody like Angela Davis inculcating an enemy doctrine in my kids' minds.

>PLAYBOY: Angela Davis claims that those who would revoke her teaching credentials on ideological grounds are actually discriminating against her because she's black. Do you think there's any truth in that?
>WAYNE: With a lot of blacks, there's quite a bit of resentment along with their dissent, and possibly rightfully so. But we can't all of a sudden get down on our knees and turn everything over to the leadership of the blacks. I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people.

>PLAYBOY: Many militant blacks would argue that they have it better almost anywhere else. Even in Hollywood, they feel that the color barrier is still up for many kinds of jobs. Do you limit the number of blacks you use in your pictures?
>WAYNE: Oh, Christ no. I've directed two pictures and I gave the blacks their proper position. I had a black slave in The Alamo, and I had a correct number of blacks in TheGreen Berets. If it's supposed to be a black character, naturally I use a black actor. But I don't go so far as hunting for positions for them. I think the Hollywood studios are carrying their tokenism a little too far.

>PLAYBOY: Can blacks be integrated into the film industry if they are denied training and education?
>WAYNE: It's just as hard for a white man to get a card in the Hollywood craft unions.

>PLAYBOY: That's hardly the point, but let's change the subject. For years American Indians have played an important—if subordinate—role in your Westerns. Do you feel any empathy with them?
>WAYNE: I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them, if that's what you're asking. Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.

>PLAYBOY: In your distaste for socialism, aren't you overlooking the fact that many worthwhile and necessary government services—such as Social Security and Medicare—derived from essentially socialistic programs evolved during the Thirties?
>WAYNE: I know all about that. In the late Twenties, when I was a sophomore at USC, I was a socialist myself—but not when I left. The average college kid idealistically wishes everybody could have ice cream and cake for every meal. But as he gets older and gives more thought to his and his fellow man's responsibilities, he finds that it can't work out that way—that some people just won't carry their load.

holy based

This for me honestly. None of my favorite westerns have him in it anyway.

Why are Americans so obsessed with these western movies? It's basically capeshit but with guns.

it's our folklore, dramaticized
>It's basically capeshit but with guns.
no idea what you mean by that. explain

>Oh, Christ no. I've directed two pictures and I gave the blacks their proper position. I had a black slave in The Alamo

unironically based and redpilled

Because he was a homosexual and created the whole gay cowboy mythos

>PLAYBOY: How do you feel about the state of the motion-picture business today? WAYNE: I'm glad I won't be around much longer to see what they do with it. The men who control the big studios today are stock manipulators and bankers. They know nothing about our business. They're in it for the buck. The only thing they can do is say, "Jeez, that picture with what's-her-name running around the park naked made money, so let's make another one. If that's what they want, let's give it to them." Some of these guys remind me of high-class whores. Look at 20th Century-Fox, where they're making movies like Myra Breckinridge. Why doesn't that son of a bitch Darryl Zanuck get himself a striped silk shirt and learn how to play the piano? Then he could work in anyroom in the house. As much as I couldn't stand some of the old-time moguls—especially Harry Cohn—these men took an interest in the future of their business. They had integrity. There was a stretch when they realized that they'd made a hero out of the goddamn gangster heavy in crime movies, that they were doing a discredit to our country. So the moguls voluntarily took it upon themselves to stop making gangster pictures. No censorship from the outside. They were responsible to the public. But today's executives don't give a damn. In their efforts to grab the box office that these sex pictures are attracting, they're producing garbage. They're taking advantage of the fact that nobody wants to be called a bluenose. But they're going to reach the point where the American people will say, "The hell with this!" And once they do, we'll have censorship in every state, in every city, and there'll be no way you can make even a worthwhile picture for adults and have it acceptable for national release.

Why is America incapable of producing men like him nowadays? Communism and cultural marxism has truly won the Cold War.

I'm no millennial, but I think he is stupid.

Every generation has their "action heroes"
>50s/60s John Wayne
>60s Sean Connery/Clint Eastwood /John Wayne/Charles Bronson
>70's Clint Eastwood/Charles Bronson
>80's Arnold/Stallone/Bruce/Gibson etc etc

>I don't hate him, I actually wonder what his best movies were since he seemed to be so highly influential

Just because John Wayne was into trannies doesn't make him homo. It makes him more manly.

>I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people.

Scary how this reasonable notion would be considered radical and atrocious today.

They hate their dads.

It's not really manly to pretend to be a 19th century cowboy in your day to day life. Men existed then as they do now and they weren't doing that.
