When you are on a ship at war the ship is the entire world, its home your country your crew your life. unrelated buy kind of humorous. in both world wars my town was an important port for convoys heading to England. in WWI a German U-boat came into the harbour and surfaced right next to a fishing vessel with a couple of guys.

the U-boat crew came out and fished them out of the water, and very kindly allowed them inside and gave them a tour of the boat, and some lunch before sending them off on their way. other times however they'd be more apt to surfacing and chucking a few bombs at fishing vessels, just for the fuck of it I guess.

French Resistance has been so heavily memed up, 99 out of 100 frenchies were collaborators or just didn't give enough of a fuck to do anything.

If you can get past the dated graphics I would say it's the best submarine game out, Uboat and Wolfpack are both currently in development and look promising, Uboat is more about crew management (a direct descendant of SH) whereas Wolfpack has everyone taking a different role in the sub and just playing that one role. Uboat is further along in early access imo, Wolfpack only has about two dozen players that seem to know what they're doing on the ships at the moment so if they're not in your crew you're fucked.

For the moment, Silent Hunter 3 is where it's at. However there is an app-based boardgame called Uboot that got kickstarted awhile ago that is a ton of fun if you're willing to pay $80 for it.

yeah I tried UBOAT but it ran horribly, might try SH3. graphics don't bother me.

Yeah Uboat still needs a lot of optimization, I've got a decent machine and it takes a long time to load initially and has some hang-ups transferring between areas.

If you do get SH3 I advise skipping the widescreen support mod, it has a glitch that messes with the periscope.
