Also, I really liked first "Sadako 3D", but I really like Koji Suzuki's books by and large (haven't read "Es" by the time I watched the movie though; also, regarding their connection, "Es"'s epilogue has a tie-right to the beginning of the first "Sadako 3D" which is supposed to follow directly from it, although I don't know whether it is considered canon), so I was viewing it from a position of someone who knew his way around main "Ring" books, was acquainted with their tone, etc. The movie VERY much did scratch my "Rasen"/"Spiral" itch (incomparably more, than the official "Rasen" movie), some parts were just bull's eye spot-on - while also putting some novel and interesting spins I haven't encountered in Suzuki's books. It's widely considered being shit, though.
Didn't much like the second part though, veered too far, in a not very interesting a way.
And speaking of 1998 movie version of "Rasen", the guy who directed it, later developed his spins into a movie of his own, called "Another Heaven". It was pretty cool, actually, I thought, so I recommend giving it a watch as well.

Anyway, just to reformulate.
Purely in my own personal opinion
1) Sadako 3D part 1 is by far the most accurate, in terms of capturing the tone, movie spin on "Ring" books ("Rasen"/"Spiral", which I consider the peak of the series, in particular), I have ever encountered - despite introducing motifs clearly of its own. Without knowing the context well enough, it will probably seem like a mess to more or less anyone.
2) "Another Heaven" from "Rasen" movie's director clearly develops some themes from said movie, but entirely in its own way, completely unconnected to any of the "Ring" books. It does its own thing, and it does it in an interesting way.
