First of all, the effects are not shit and they still look incredible, especially Frank's transformation and the cenobites.
Second, it came five years after the thing but the budget of hellraiser was 1 milion while the budget for the The Thing was 15 milion

I think the original would've been better if it had been low-key implied that Frank is Kirsty's real father and Garak played both parts.

I read that it was shot with British actors then had American dialogue dubbed on.

Clive Barker is a hack. Don't know if he is worse than King though.

If you're a completionist you might as well. Some of the later films are mostly forgettable but have some decent concepts. Hellworld does some fun stuff with the format and features based Lance Henriksen as the antagonist. Inferno is like a lower-budget Jacob's Ladder and actually surprisingly great, gives off a filthy/grimy industrial vibe that's befitting of the mythos
