I watched a couple German movies recently. The Mabuse trilogy that's interesting (and in the same continuity as M) but not my favorite Lang movies. The White Rose about Sophie Scholl that felt almost like a documentary it was very low budget but it had a good and scary court sequence with Roland Freisler. Now I'm watching Kolberg. Movies during the times of the Third Reich were generally shit-tier but this one is at least interesting because it's from 1945 and it used real soldiers who were transported to the set from the frontlines (not that it was really important). Real Kolberg already fell by the time of its release.

if you pay close attention you will notice that it takes roughly 3 months for a trend from the us to wash over to germany, without any change in formula to conform to german culture. just copy and paste.
as such, the german movie watcher doesnt want german films, he wants films made in the us.
so any german actor/director/whatever quickly goes to the states where his skills might be held in higher regard than here.
