Andrei Tarkovsky

Is he the greatest filmmaker ever or an overrated hack? What's his best film?

greatest overrated hack

>What's his best film?
arguably andrej rublev
zerkalo is amazing but polarizing
never really liked stalker all that much but of course it should be considered a contender
nostalghia is underrated
>Is he the greatest filmmaker ever
there is no way to say it. for me it certainly is

shmuck fuck

He's not a hack. I figured that out after seeing "Ivan's Childhood", which is actually not one of his best films. He has enough command of imagery and scene-setting to rise above hackery by that alone. But he does tend to wander off into scenes that are basically episodic dreams, which can be confusing or even boring. At times. As a whole, though, his work is very impressive.

Thats just Mawrty with a moustache

mostly a hack. Ivans childhood is good, his other films are miserable and boring shit that pretentious people pretend to like because only someone whos into film would sit through movies that boring.

Tarkovsky films are the least pretentious, soulful, most honest movies out there. Liking them won't make you look cool, it's just natural and purely human.

I watched Stalker about 7 times by now and would gladly rewatch it again anytime, am I pretending to like it every single time I watch it?

yes

I watched Stalker on a complete whim a few days ago and now there are constantly Tarkovsky-related threads on Yea Forums
Was it always like this? Is it the work of the Zone?

yes

Cringe
Based

Yes

No

People like this are so unable to comprehend of why other people feel so strongly about a certain film so their defense mechanism fires up calling everyone else dumb in order to feel justified, trying to convince themselves that literally everyone is merely pretending to enjoy it just so they feel a tiny bit better about themselves as they further dwelve in their own delusion.

You can see the same thing happening in nearly any 2001 thread

It's not just on Yea Forums, it's a tactic that is ubiquitous in online debate. Literally invalidating the other person's perception rather than addressing their perspective.

There are many threads about Tarkovsky on Yea Forums.

Are Nostalghia and The Sacrifice any good? I have heard mixed things about them.

The Sacrifice is a good film. Nostalghia is fine but can be pretty meh in the last act.

Alright, thanks. I hope they will be better than Solaris. I love Andrei Rublev, Stalker and Mirror.

Based. I'll be honest, I was that deeply impacted by Once Upon a Time in America. I didn't go away going 'wow'. But I don't have to shit on those that regard it a masterpiece. I just personally didn't have it resonant with me emotionally much despite all the impressive technical stuff. A part of that were my expectations. It was hyped the definitive gangster film so I was expecting a more detailed rise and fall arc as seen in Godfather or Goodfellas. It was a breezy 4 hours though. Seriously only felt like two or so had passed.

*wasn't

he's really good. I like mirror best

That movie was boring and kinda all over the place but it was well shot. I like Stalker

The internet is always subtly suggesting things, not always consciously. I watched Stalker for the first time a few days ago too.

agree, i feel the same way about bela tarr films

The Sacrifice and Andrei Rublev are his best.

>greatest
>overrated
Why do we always have to go to extremes?
Sometimes I feel that people who call Tarkovsky a hack are people who tried watching Stalker but can't get through 5 minutes without getting sleepy or bored.
I've watched Stalker, Nostalghia and Solyaris and I can definitely say Tarkovsky isn't a hack.

I can't believe he lost or screwed up the Stalker tapes and they had to re-shoot the whole movie a second time

The final scene of Nostalghia is one of the best things Tarkovsky ever made.

Isn't communism supposed to shut down art? How did the soviets still manage to produce so much kino?

National pride. Russians made War & Peace just because they were butthurt that the US made one.
The end result of that butthurt made their version of War & Peace the best version there is.

The soviet government halted the production of nearly every Tark film ever. Here’s an interview with his son
>"Apart from that, my father had to fight for at least three years for each and every project, which was just dead time. This was a real pity as he was working day and night. He had to shelve a lot of projects just because he wasn’t allowed to work at his own pace. Few people know that he wasn’t a “reflective” or “slow” director. He could have actually made one film every year."
