- the movie was shot using tech he developed for Avatar, but Avatar was partially a tech demo to see if they could make photorealistic CGI characters in order to make Alita possible

Rodriguez made Sin City which is one of the most faithful comic adaptations ever made

A failure like alita: battle angel is always the result of a great many people making every mistake possible. They focused on the wrong things, used the wrong material as reference (the OVA), thought certain arcs needed to be hollywoodified (motorball) and ultimately managed to take a different route to making all the same mistakes as the OVA.

The manga is way too rushed and episodic to work as a movie so weaving the different chapters together using the structure of the OVA makes sense to me, and they haven't even gotten to the actual motorball arc yet

They had more than enough time to wrap up the first volume, and then some, conclusively in two hours. Instead they stuffed in an hour of literal filler. As the OVA was only 60 minutes long and covered just about the same amount of actual material.

I'd hardly call most of that filler. It's clear that all the extra "fluff" was there to establish "Alita" as an innocent/immature/pure character so her arc will have impact as she becomes more and more hard in the sequel(s). Yeah, it's not chewing through the chapters/arcs but the first movie has to do a ton of heavy lifting to establish the world and ground the story before we can get running.

Imagine actually knowing all the names of side characters from one of the dumbest movies of the year.

I started trying to list what is filler and I ended up with most of the movie. As none of the characters really amount to anything meaningful or do anything really impactful. They're all so strangled by each other's need for screen time that none of them can develop or do anything meaningful. They could've easily just dropped grewishka, chiren, the entire bullshit ido backstory, the berserker body, most of hugo's friends, street motorball, nova as a whole, etc, and spent more time developing vector, hugo, and alita, while leaving ido as this utter weirdo who seems to mean well, that no one is really sure about, but as long as he's offering free repairs, people don't look too closely at shit he does.

The most interesting thing about gunnm, (until nova pops up) is the scrapyard. As it is essentially a human version of mouse utopia. No one can leave, but everyone has everything they need. Thus human culture has become something completely alien, with only small flashes of humanity. That small flash of humanity being what attracts ido to gally in the first place. The movie should've been more about developing the setting instead of trying to stuff in as many characters as possible.

I think the problem you're having stems from Cameron having completely rewritten the ENTIRE story in his adaptation, having several characters in different roles. It's clear his plan has always been to do the whole thing. This means that you're seeing bits and pieces from his adaptation and trying to fit them into the original story(Which frankly wouldn't work as a movie OR tv show). There's a ton of setup in the first movie that might pay off only later, and most of the "filler" falls into that category.

Disney had to bury this movie by using their shills. Alita was released by fox studios and few people knew that Disney was negotiating to buy Fox that time. Alita was a threat to Cpt Marvel. Having a Fox movie with a strong female protagonist to overshadow Disneys strong female protagonist was bad news. Fox stocks would have gone up, resulting some extra billion's on Disneys tab. Thats why there were some really, really biased and retarded reviews in rotten tomatoes for Alita. The mouse was clearly pulling the strings. People got wind of these shenanigans and decided to defend the movie to this day.

He decided to make her like this I guess because he wanted to be as faithful to the manga/anime eyes, and lore wise, because she was originaly from Mars I think and Martians look different. When I first saw her in the trailer it kinda felt uncanny to me as well but the old man cameron did justice to her, and made her really lovable and believable as a character and ultimately the big eyes added more flair and purity into her. I got used to her eyes pretty easy and Im glad that Cameron didnt got cucked and kept it that way.
