Just got done binge watching The Terror, got through it in 2 days and can see why it got such high praise. Knew about it when it was new, but thought it would actually be scary and I loathe horror, so I avoided it. Surprisingly only the first episode was unsettling, and I greatly enjoyed the series as a whole.
Some thoughts and minor complaints, feel free to discuss
>The styrofoam ice sets were pretty bad, especially when they climbed or set their pick in them.
>A lot of the minor characters looked and sounded way to similar, especially in the dark of the ship, lost track of who was who. Might just be me being slow though I guess.
>The episodes on the ships, 1-6, were far superior to the ones on King Williams island, not only in the set being much more interesting but what actually happens. The ending of the series felt a bit drawn out and slow, lots of back and forth in the camps.
>This is probably too much to ask but towards the end when every character was starving, they still looked quite healthy, Gibson was the most realistic looking at that point, but mostly because he's naturally gaunt looking. When Goodsir poisoned himself he was still chubby, comon.

The goal of western governments back then was to ensure their populations that nothing like this could ever happen outside of Soviet Union, it is also always nice to take a jab at your political opponents.
Reality is - the incident itself was caused by general lack of knowledge in that particular sequence of events that could lead to something like what has happened.
And I don't mean "lack of knowledge amongst Soviet scientists" I mean lack of knowledge amongst everyone. People that were studying all the previous nuclear incidents from around the world, people that had highest degrees possible in their nuclear-related field, people like Legasov, all of them were scratching their heads for quite some time, trying to understand exactly what has happened and how. It took them 800 hours to create a model of what has happened using a Monte Carlo method on a computing machine.
Show's trial scene makes it look like everything was very simple, here are some red\blue cards - half of them stimulate the reaction, the other half dampens it, the operators didn't knew about the dangers of Iodine pit because they were stupid and that is why everything exploded. The show implies that to perform a test at such low power (200MWh) would be a useless act, but both of these statements are incorrect.
Of course operators knew what iodine pit is, they knew how to recover the reactor from it, and the experiment itself was to see - how would turbines\reactor core behave in case of a complete blackout. And although normally reactor would not be operating on such low power level (nominal power for it is 1000-1200MWh, and it can safely go up to 3000MWh) blackouts can happen during the start-up\shutting down procedure when the power is low, and therefore the test was still valid and useful.
That is why the operators decided to proceed with it, knowing that they can always press the OH SHIT (scram) button.

Unfortunately, in their particular situation they had to press it a couple of seconds earlier. The flaw of design, the very last 0.5 meters of control rods were made from a material that did not interfere with the reaction, and for few milliseconds after the insertion they were serving as a catalyst for the reaction instead of a dampener. And these few milliseconds were enough to cause a massive thermal explosion.
By itself the idea of using graphite to save some shekels and improve the efficiency of power-generating of a reactor core was not a bad one, in a normal situation it would never present any problems.
But in that particular Goldberg-machine level of bullshit of a situation it proved to be detrimental, and despite what show tells us - no one could have predicted it happening.
That is why it is so hard to blame anyone for what has happened, and there is no point in doing so, really.
All we can do is to learn from mistakes of the past and move forward.
