The key difference is predominantly the ripple effect of social media, and its crystalized in this distinct, important difference:
Politics in service of the work, narrative, characters, plot, or story, VS. politics in service of the authors ego and reputation to the detriment of audience engagement.
Obviously both have always exist and still do exist but you're kidding yourself if the latter hasnt seen a SHARP, meteoric rise in the past few years. Its been present noticably to some capacity since 9/11 but its bordering on all encompassing now, where all the biggest media are engaged in it to some capacity.
Compare Dark Knight Returns' take on 80s politics, Reagan, and the Cold War, or Watchmens takes on Vietnam, the Cold War, and etc. to things like "ethics in hammer wielding".
A good example is Bendis. Compare early Ultimate Spider-Mans takes on the early 00'swhich included political topics at the time like government surveillance and terrorism to fucking Riri Ironheart.
