If you want to make fun of Deakin you've got much shittier movies to use: Assassination of Jesse James..., No Country for Old Men, The Big Lebowski, True Grit, Skyfall, Jarhead, A Beautiful Mind, O Brother Where Art Though, Fargo, 1984 and so on and so on. The guy is obviously a hack fraud that makes only the shittiest films. Plus he's so old his mom is probably dead.

Watch anything Deakins has worked on to see more cinematography that doesn't really add anything to the movie and is there to just look pretty.
Take the Sicario meme shot where he needed to paint something ugly (since he has lots of control) but ends up falling on his own trappings, making yet another run of the mill Deakins digital photography work and putting everything prettily in position with Always Perfect Lightning and Always Perfect Framing etc.

That's actually a fair point, his work with the Coen bros is top notch, and with other directors too. HOWEVER his work with dulleneuve is dire. I think it's because Villeneuve doesn't really have a firm idea of who he is a director, so he lets his suborbinates run amok and then reaps all the credit. Entire segments of Sicario and especially Blade Runner felt like a Deakins wet dream, with little to no consideration of the project in general

I disagree. It's not like Arrival or any of his non Deakins films look or operate completely different, which would be the case if it is like you implied it is.

Deakins has most of the creative control with lighting, Villeneuve with framing/composition/blocking. And they always work together long before the actual production starts, so your point of Villeneuve "letting his subordinates rum amok" is factually wrong.

Well Arrival is Villeneuve's best film by far, in my opinion. And it does feel very different to Prisoners, Sicario and Blade Runner.
Arrival is a very sleek machine, whereas the others are comparatively bogged down and tedious. I think at least some of that is due to Deakins. Villeneuve isn't a bad director, but he's pretty young and clearly can't handle a larger-than-life DP like Deakins. He's yet to find his own directorial style.
I don't really respect Villeneuve as a director as yet. I mean he's made some decent films but I don't really think he's the second coming of Christ as some people on board seem to think. Still, there's a lot of room to improve, and I'm really looking forward to his Dune

I find Arrival too "Hollywood" when compared to any of his other films, which is mostly the fault of the script.
Yeah Dune should be interesting since it's the first film in quite a while where Villeneuve is also involved with the writing, which probably means he won't allow any department to twist his vision in any way right down to the script itself.

And while I like all his collaborations with Deakins, picking Fraser as the DP for Dune was the best possible decision
