Even if some think he is a moron for not following Crozier's advice about the rescue party, we see that it would not have made any difference in their chances for survival. I've been reading The Terror and it's even bleaker than the show, if such a thing were possible.
Just read the part where Harry Peglar (pic related) was found dead, his sailing party ambushed and killed by the Tuunbaq. But where the others had been eaten and dragged under the water, Peglar swam to safety and seemingly died of hypothermia, away from the beast... until Crozier notes that he was surrounded by giant footprints, concluding that the beast had watched Peglar freeze to death, rather than ending him quickly.
